Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta's Windsor Cogeneration Plant is seeking to hire a Temporary Relief Operating Engineer, 2nd Class for 3-4 months starting in June. Reporting to the Windsor Plant Manager, this position will be responsible for providing absence relief for various operator positions on a 12-hour shift schedule.

This is a temporary, unionized, safety-sensitive position. Pre-employment testing will be required as a condition of employment.

This in a UniforLocal444 position covered by the terms of the collective agreement.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Operations and monitoring of all plant systems consistent with requirements of the Technical Standards & Safety Authority and the Safety Act
  • Working closely with shift partners to ensure high standards of communication and plant operating procedures and policies are maintained
  • Working with other staff to ensure the health, safety, and environmental systems are maintained and managed including safe work plans, and the safe isolation of equipment and systems to perform maintenance work
  • Taking an active role in plant training and development, procedural development and review, system development, management, and other project-related activities
  • Maintain mandatory health and safety training updates in a timely manner
  • Performing plant routine water tests on a regular basis and understanding water chemistry and water and waste management operations
  • Troubleshooting all plant systems to ensure optimal operations and taking corrective action as required
  • Submitting work requests on those systems that require maintenance work
  • Maintaining the units within all applicable guidelines and regulations, including emissions, efficiency, heat rate, capacity, and safety
  • Maintaining a complete set of logs that includes all information on normal operating parameters, and detailed information on upset conditions
  • Competently and efficiently starts up and shuts down in both normal and upset conditions
  • Performing routine preventative maintenance checks on various plant systems and equipment and performing minor maintenance work on shift when required
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of the plant systems and developments, and updating training material as changes to the plant systems are made
  • Take an active role in first aid emergency response situations regarding fire, health and safety, and environmental incidents
  • The successful person will be expected to participate in the incident management system and near-miss program, while reporting incidents in the Synergy database
  • Complete assignments as directed by Shift-Engineer, Operations and Maintenance Supervisor/Chief Engineer, and Plant Manager

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following essential qualifications and experience:

  • Valid Ontario 2nd Class Operating Engineers Certificate
  • Preference will be given to candidates who hold an Electrical or Millwright trade certification
  • Team player who enjoys collaborating with others to ensure effective and efficient operations of the facility
