Job summary

The Salvation Army in New Westminster, BC, is seeking a Temporary Part Time House Support Worker to join our shelter team on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. This role focuses on creating a safe, supportive environment for residents and visitors.

Key duties include monitoring safety, maintaining documentation, assisting with laundry and cleaning, coordinating resident activities, handling intake and discharge, and liaising with police and partners as needed.

Qualifications

• High School completion required.
• Diploma or degree in social services or related field preferred.
• Minimum one year frontline social service experience.

Responsibilities

• Monitor environment and residents to ensure safety; perform status checks and room searches as required.
• Maintain documentation (in-out and incident logs) related to residents and initiate new records.
• Provide laundry service for shelters and clients; clean shelter rooms, washrooms, kitchen, lounge and common areas.
• Coordinate and facilitate resident programming; perform intake and discharge procedures.
• Intervene in crisis situations; provide emotional support and advocacy as needed.
• Distribute funds to residents per established policies; liaise with police, funders and agencies.
• Provide orientation to new staff and volunteers; attend mandatory staff meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Temporary Part Time House Support Worker, Saturday & Sunday, 7:30 am - 7:30 pm. Averaging Agreement.

Position Purpose summary: House Support worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors

Accountabilities:

The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar duties to the listed below:

CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:

• Monitors the environment and clients/residents to ensure safety and security; completes regular client/resident status checks and room searches as required
• Maintains and updates all appropriate documentation (including in-out and incident log books) related to clients/residents and initiates any new documentation
• Provides laundry service for the shelters and shelter clients
• Cleans shelter rooms, washrooms, kitchen, lounge and common areas and performs basic building maintenance
• complete all reports required by the funder and The Salvation Army
• Coordinates and facilitates resident programming as required
• Performs intake and discharge procedures for clients/residents as assigned
• Monitors appropriate behavior; intervenes in crisis situations, provides emotional support and advocacy as required
• Distributes funds to residents in accordance with established policies guidelines
• Engages in the development of inter-personal relationships that promote dignity and respect
• Liaises with Police, funders, court personnel, community agencies, families, and other staff members
• Provides orientation to newly hired staff, volunteers, students
• Attends 4 mandatory in-person staff meetings a year
• Performs other duties as assigned

Education, Experience, AND Qualifications:

Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.

Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

• High School Completion
• Social services Diploma or related Diploma or Degree

Experience and Knowledge:

Minimum one year Experience in frontline social service work

Skills and Capabilities:

The performance of the job requires keyboarding/Manual record keeping, and lifting/packing clients/residents property/personal effects and engaging in recreational activities.

The performance of the job requires attentive listening and observation of body language, continuously monitoring the environment, multitasking and reading. Ability to work in a fast paced environment, to meet deadlines and cope with stressful situations.

Must be able to list a minimum of 40lbs

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $24.32 to $24.32 with a maximum of $24.32. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
