The Opportunity

RVS invites applications for a temporary, full-time (30 hrs/wk) Learning Assistant position starting immediately until June 27, 2025, at Kathryn School. The Learning Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the diverse needs of learners within the classroom, school, and community settings throughout Rocky View Schools (RVS). Reporting to the Principal, the Learning Assistant collaborates with teachers to adapt and implement programs for students with complex needs, focusing on promoting their health, learning, and independence.

Responsibilities Include

• Providing assistance to students as identified in their individualized plans, including those requiring additional supports such as personal, medical care, and safety needs.
• Implementing and reinforcing strategies as directed by teachers and identified in student plans, including Personalized Learning Plans (PLP), Individualized Program Plans (IPP), Behavior Support Plans (BSP), safety plans, and medical plans.
• Recording observations and behavioral data to support positive behavior strategies.
• Participating in collaborative planning meetings for IPPs or SSPs as requested.
• Assisting with preparation of individualized program materials under the guidance of the classroom or support teachers.
• Actively promoting student learning and independence.
• Facilitating interactions among students with special needs and their peers.
• Respecting confidentiality and maintaining privacy of student and personnel information.
• Supporting routine personal care activities such as toileting, movement, hygiene, eating, and feeding.
• Assisting in exercises, adaptive physical education, and motor skills development as directed by specialists and monitored by teachers.
• Supporting students’ medical needs, including transfers, tube feeding, tracheotomy care, oxygen, catheterization, medication administration, and other routine medical requirements.

Education/Experience

• Educational Assistant Certificate or a related field diploma/certificate.
• Training in behavior de-escalation or willingness to obtain certification.
• Minimum one (1) year experience working with students with challenging behaviors, applying positive behavior supports (asset).
• CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain it (asset).

Knowledge and Skills

• Ability to handle complex and sensitive issues professionally and promptly.
• Ability to follow plans and directions from teaching staff to assist students.
• Ability to build rapport with students and staff.
• Adaptability to dynamic situations and managing stress effectively.
• Effective teamwork skills.
• Knowledge of child development.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web applications.
