Qualifications

  • Special Education Part 1 Qualifications Required.
  • Knowledge of the scope and sequence of Primary/Junior Curriculum is required.
  • Lived experience with Indigenous communities is preferred.

Indigenous Education (Grades 9 - 12)

Position Description

The Itinerant Student Resource Teacher (grades 9 - 12) will provide individual, classroom and school level support for students and teachers as they deliver programs for improved student achievement. Reporting directly to the System Principal of Indigenous Education, the Itinerant Student Resource Teacher will work in collaboration with the Indigenous Education Lead and department members to support student learning within the Halton District School Board (HDSB).

Responsibilities
  • Communicate regularly with school core teams for timely academic interventions
  • Co-develop instructional strategies with school teams in support of student engagement
  • Build relationships with students and families
  • Apply utmost confidentiality while maintaining detailed student progress notes
  • Track observations and actions to inform system improvements
  • Communicate regularly with System Principal(s) and Leaders over system resources
  • Adhere to system coherence and a collaborative approach to practice
  • Support the fundamental principles of the Ministry of Education's Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting in Ontario Schools,1st Ed., Covering Grades 1-12 (2010), and the Ministry of Education's: Assessment & Evaluation (2024) principles for student achievement
Qualifications And/or Equivalent Experience
  • Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification, in good standing is required
  • Special Education Part 1 Qualifications Required
  • Intermediate and/or Senior English or Math Qualifications Preferred
  • First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Histories and Current Realities AQ (FNMI Part 1) Preferred
  • Knowledge of the scope and sequence of Primary/Junior Curriculum is required
  • Lived experience and/or experience working with Indigenous communities is preferred
Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of responsive pedagogies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, presentation and media fluency
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with a strong understanding of factors impacting achievement
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team, willingness to be flexible and able to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others
  • Proven ability to manage and safeguard sensitive data
  • Experience with Aspen software would be an asset
  • Proficient in using g-tools and various presentation platforms
  • Demonstrated experience with UNDRIP and TRC
  • Effective use of technology enhanced learning to support student achievement
  • Exceptional collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated experience teaching First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Studies Curriculum (Secondary), as well as other curriculum areas for cross-curricular integration and synthesis
  • A strong knowledge of the diversity of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit histories, contributions and brilliance
  • Strong interpersonable skills such as: a caring approach to listening, intellectual humility, a commitment to relational and wholistic learning, reflective practitioner
