This temporary Indigenous Counsellor role provides school-based prevention and intervention services to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students and their families, with casual replacement coverage.

Qualifications

  • Two-year Degree or Diploma in Child and Youth Counselling, Social Service Work or Child Studies and a minimum of one year experience in a school Board or community agency providing counselling services to children and families.
  • Experience working with Indigenous students, families, and communities is required.
  • Familiarity with local First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures and ways of knowing is required.
  • First Nations, Métis or Inuit ancestry or lived experience within Indigenous communities is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide school-based prevention and intervention services to address social and emotional barriers to learning for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students.
  • Support Indigenous students, families and communities within elementary, secondary and alternative school settings.
  • This position exists as casual replacement coverage for an existing role and is subject to availability of work.

TEMPORARY INDIGENOUS COUNSELLOR

POSITION TITLE: Temporary Indigenous Counsellor

SALARY RANGE: $42.08 - $48.79 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay

DATE OF VACANCY: As soon as possible

POSITION SUMMARY

The Indigenous Counselor provides school-based prevention and intervention services to address the social and emotional barriers to learning for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students in elementary, secondary and alternative school settings.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of a two-year Degree or Diploma in Child and Youth Counselling, Social Service Work or Child Studies and a minimum of one (1) year experience in a school Board or community agency providing counselling services to children and families. Experience working with Indigenous students, families, and communities is required. Familiarity with local First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures, perspectives, values, and ways of knowing is required. First Nations, Métis, or Inuit ancestry and/or significant lived experience within Indigenous communities is considered an asset.

The recruitment process requires a criminal background check for work with vulnerable persons. In accordance with regulations, this will be an ongoing expectation of employment for TVDSB employees every five years of employment.
