Job summary

Prairie Valley School Division in Balcarres is seeking a Nutrition Coordinator to manage school food service, ensure healthy and balanced meals, and deliver safe, organized operations for students, staff and the community.

This temporary full-time role runs 8 hours per day on school days, with a schedule that excludes summer break; it requires Grade 12 plus food service credentials, and offers health benefits and a matched pension.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Certificate or diploma as a Food Service Worker would be an asset.
• Experience managing kitchen operations and inventories in a commercial food delivery environment is a definite asset.
• Ability to perform physical labour including regular lifting up to 25 pounds and standing for long periods.
• Ability to tolerate temperatures from hot ovens, dishwashers and other equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, prepare and serve large-scale meals.
• Knowledge of kitchen safety and sanitation standards and safe food handling practices.
• Basic analytical and mathematical skills for measuring ingredients, converting recipes, making change and balancing cash.
• Ability to safely use and operate kitchen equipment.
• Ability to perform basic food sales and purchasing functions.
• Ability to manage confidential material and maintain staff and student privacy.

Responsibilities

• Promote and support healthy eating and good nutrition through proactive menu planning and safe food preparation/handling/distribution.
• Proactively and thoroughly complete required daily, weekly, monthly and annual cleaning of food service area(s) and equipment (including preventative maintenance) complying with current health standards.
• Source and purchase inventory items, manage inventory efficiently, identify food and supplies to be ordered and maintain manual and electronic files and records.
• Assist the School-based Administrator in managing and monitoring the nutrition budget, including pricing items, collecting and handling cash and/or vouchers, and prudently purchasing supplies and groceries.
• In situations where Commercial Cooking and/or Food Studies courses are incorporated into the operation of the canteen/servery and purchasing of supplies, work in collaboration with and seek input from instructional staff, and work with students in a non-supervisory capacity.
• Perform other duties as may be required or assigned by the School Administrator.

Balcarres Community School offers Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 programming to an enrolment of approximately 260 students. Balcarres is located 100 km northeast of Regina. This is a temporary full-time position that will commence as soon as possible and ends on December 18, 2026, or upon return of incumbent, whichever is earlier. There is a possibility for an extension.

Role Overview

The school Nutrition Coordinator is responsible for managing school food service in schools with specific responsibilities for preparing and serving a balanced and healthy range of food items in a clean and organized food service environment. The Nutrition Coordinator ensures respectful, positive and professional food services to students, staff and community members.
