Duties:
In addition to those duties outlined in the job description, duties include supporting students with diverse needs and/or high behavioural needs. Without restricting the generality of the purpose above, the Educational Assistant II shall perform such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned including but not restricted to the following:

  • Where appropriate provide personal care assistance to students which may include dressing, undressing, eating, toileting, personal hygiene, food preparation and feeding and other health and personal care needs.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks which may include, in extreme circumstances, the restraining of students who have become violent towards staff/students.
  • Perform non-invasive para-medical functions (i.e. stoma care, seizure care, in-lying catheterization care) under the direction of parents, guardians and medical personnel.
  • Utilize adaptive technology, adaptive devices, and augmentative communication devices under the direction of a Speech Language Pathologist or other professional staff.
  • Attend to the physiotherapeutic needs of the student (i.e. walker, three-wheel bicycle, standing frame, and roll seats).
  • Use wheelchair mobility management program (power wheelchairs) as outlined by Occupational Therapists.
  • Assist and supervise life skills activities within the school setting (i.e. cook program).
  • Possess the ability to handle physically challenging tasks
  • May be required to use personal vehicle to transport students

Education & Qualifications:

  • A minimum of Grade 12 diploma from a recognized educational institution as approved by the Board of Education or General Educational Development (GED)
  • A minimum of one (1) year post-secondary training related to student needs such as Educational Assistant, Early Childhood Development, Youth Worker or Rehabilitation Worker (such training must be from a recognized educational institution as approved by the Employer)
  • NVCI and TLR training if required
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in providing direct personal care
  • A valid Class 5 drivers license

Physical Requirements: The ability to do heavy work is required in some assignments (i.e., exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to lift students and/or move objects).

Wage & Benefits: In accordance with the current CUPE Local 5512 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Currently, this is a range of $22.16 to $27.28 per hour.
