Job description

This position is assigned to the school-based team to provide support for students. Working under the supervision of the Principal/Vice Principal and under the general direction of a teacher, the Education Assistant will work directly with students to assist with social, emotional, behavioural, physical, and academic needs. This position includes supervision of students in non-classroom times such as before school, recess, lunch, and after school. Food safe course completion would be an asset.

This position is due to a leave. LIF to be added to hours for the year.

All awarded applicants will be required to join the CUPE Local 748 Union. Note: A Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check will be required from successful applicants, with a review every five (5) years.

Responsibilities Will Vary And May Include The Following:
  1. Facilitating student learning individually or in small groups.
  2. Documenting daily progress and assisting in the collection of data for evaluating student progress.
  3. Supporting students in learning social behaviour or life skills.
  4. Supporting students with intense, aggressive/non-compliant behaviour through positive behaviour support principles.
  5. Carrying out personal and health care routines, such as feeding, dressing, toileting, physical support, and lifting.
  6. Supporting learning and skill development activities in worksite and community-based settings.
  7. Providing information to teachers for home/school communication while maintaining confidentiality.
  8. Monitoring and assisting students during unstructured times like recess, lunch, before/after school, and between classes.
  9. Attending meetings as part of the school-based team.
  10. Using equipment including adaptive technology, augmentative communication devices, and computer software.
  11. Demonstrating a positive and respectful working relationship as part of a collaborative team.

Required Qualifications: College of the Rockies SPEDA Course; Selkirk College Classroom and Community Support Worker (CCSW) Program and/or equivalent college program or at least one year of college-level training in the Human Services field focusing on behaviour management and students with special needs. Demonstrated successful practicum completion is required.

Preferred Qualifications (training will be provided as required):

  • Current autism training (e.g., POPARD Level 1 or equivalent).
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training (e.g., MANDT).
  • If currently employed as an Education Assistant in School District #8, opportunities to access autism training will be provided during non-instructional time.

Job Summary: SD8 EDUCATION ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION: The incumbent is assigned to the school-based team to provide specialized support for students with identified special needs as directed by the Principal. Must be flexible in assignments. It is expected that all employees will follow district communication protocols and maintain confidentiality. Effective communication and teamwork are essential.

Job Requirements:

  • College of the Rockies SPEDA course; Selkirk College CCSW Program or equivalent; or at least one year of college-level training in the Human Services field with a focus on behaviour management and students with special needs.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and adults.
  • Effective communication with staff, students, and parents.
  • Ability to collaborate and maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work as part of school planning teams.
  • Flexibility and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • May need to dispense approved medications as prescribed, with training provided.
  • Ability to work with non-compliant students non-confrontationally.
  • Training in non-violent crisis intervention will be provided.
  • Specific skills for special assignments will be outlined as needed.
  • May require a valid B.C. (Class 5) Driver's License.
  • Understanding of safe work practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Noon Hour Supervisor:

Job Summary: Supervises students indoors and outdoors under the direction of the Principal or designate.

Job Requirements:

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Authority, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Work with non-confrontational approach to non-compliant students; crisis intervention training provided.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Provide care for students' medical needs as directed, with training provided.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and emergency protocols.
  • Report safety concerns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
