Job Description:
The Assistant Store Manager ensures consistent profitability of the store by implementing national and regional standards in sales, customer service, merchandising, marketing, public relations, store staff training, reclamation and product donation flow, transportation, and processing of in store donations.
This position is for the Thrift Store at 200 Rutland Road South, Kelowna, B.C. It is a temporary position to cover a medical leave. There is a possibility of the term being extended.
RESPONSIBILITIES and Accountabilities:
- Along with Store Manager, directs all operations of the store to meet sales targets and control expenses while maintaining customer service standards
- Plans store layout to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays, decides on in-store promotions, auctions and/or special events and keeps abreast of marketing trends by checking competitor’s stock
- Handles customer and donor concerns or complaints in a timely and courteous manner
- Provides excellent customer service by answering and returning phone calls, emails and in-store visits
- Ensures the front tills and POS systems are running correctly, and remediates any breakdowns
- Ensures store donations are received, sorted, and priced appropriately
- Determines and maintains appropriate inventory levels based on spot checks of the store and reviewing weekly sales records
- Protects the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring
- Ensures attractiveness and cleanliness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”
STAFF SUPERVISION
- Assists Store Manager in the hiring, onboarding process and with disciplinary matters
- Orientates, supports, trains, evaluates, recognizes, disciplines and terminates in concert with Territorial/National standards`
- Provides direction, leadership and support to staff
- Conducts regular supervision with staff and assists Store Manager with assuring that performance reviews are completed in a timely manner
- Along with Store Manager, ensures staff complete all mandatory training and certifications as required and identify training opportunities
- Oversees forklift, bailer, and trucking operations (including training) and general maintenance of equipment
- Along with Store Manager, ensures effective communication of any policy changes to paid and unpaid mission partners
- Dedicated to personal growth and leadership development by participating in leadership and management training, workshops, and conferences
ADMINISTRATION
- Along with Store Manager, plans, prepares, schedules, and chairs weekly stand-up meetings, monthly staff meetings, and training sessions
- Along with Store Manager, leads Thrift Store Leadership Team meetings;
- In the absence of the Store Manager, the Assistant Store Manager will participate in monthly Management meetings (at our Sutherland location) and Ministry-Wide monthly zoom meetings
- Along with Store Manager, prepares daily and weekly reports for the Community Engagement Manager and Business Manager
- Along with Store Manager, prepares deposit information and sends to Regional Accounting
- Oversees staff scheduling, including approving vacations, sick time, timesheets and enters bi-weekly payroll
- In the absence of the Store Manager, and in coordination with senior management, ensures that HR files, incident reports, disciplinary reports are up to date and kept confidential
- Oversees the discount cards for mission partners
- Works with other Salvation Army agencies to deliver emergency & disaster services as assigned by the Corps Officer
HEALTH AND SAFETY
- Oversees the health and safety of all customers, staff, and volunteers while in the store
- Assists to manages health & safety, labour/employee relations and other related issues at a store level
- Ensures in-store safety for staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, cleans spillage and maintains store cleanliness dealing with volatile situations); ensures that the property (store) is always secured
- Ensures all mission partners (staff and volunteers) are aware of emergency procedures and are prepared to implement them immediately as necessary
- Ensures the proper procedures are followed in the event of a workplace injury, illness or conducting incident investigations as applicable
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
- Along with Store Manager, analyzes store financial statements and strategizes appropriate action to attain financial goals, monitoring the cost of goods (i.e., buying products for all aspects of the store, tracking costs, etc.)
- Ensures all cash operations are carried out according to policy and procedures and ensures deposits are secure
- Ensure opening and closing procedures are followed including daily cash reports, bank deposits, and maintaining / reporting on extra float
- Ensures nightly sales are deposited into the appropriate financial institution
- Along with Store Manager, establishes and manages in-store budget within guidelines; executes budgetary objectives by attaining sales margins, maintaining staffing cost ratios, and profit objectives as established by the region
- May assist Community Engagement and Resources Manager in preparing financial and other requested reports (e.g. sales reports, staffing costs, and payroll data)
NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
Works under the direction of the Store Manager and in cooperation with the Community Engagement Manager, Corps Officers and Management team.

Internal: Thrift Store Leadership Team, Management team (in the absence of the Store Manager), Staff, Volunteers
External: Community, Donors/Supporters, External vendors, Recycling Buyers
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
- Reports to: Store Manager
- Direct reports: between 20-30 staff members
- Assists in overseeing volunteers
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Considerable material responsibilities (access to cash, donations, proper safekeeping of donations and goods, may have access to personal information, etc.).
- Responsible for use of own resources.
- Provides input regarding departmental budget.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The incumbent will work in assigned Thrift Store location (both retail store and warehouse/sorting areas)
The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

- Washrooms
- Odours
- Truck Fumes
- Dealing with angry people
- Work schedule may impact life (weeknights & weekends)

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Highschool diploma or equivalent Valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- 2-3 years of retail experience required

- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- The ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Vulnerable Sector Check (if appropriate).

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $47,664.35 to $59,580.43 with a maximum of $71,496.52.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
