Position Description

A temporary part time (0.5) Indigenous Support/Transition Coach Teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective September 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. The assignment will be at Dr. Kearney Middle School.

Dr. Kearney Middle School is a vibrant middle school offering classes in grades 7-9. We enroll a diverse student population of 600, 25% of whom are of Indigenous descent. We have an active Parent Advisory Committee and a supportive parent community. Our school is committed to student-centered learning, a focus on collaborative planning, and a caring environment to provide quality education. Our other exciting opportunities for students include our outstanding visual and performing arts programs, Hockey Academy, and the range of other extracurricular opportunities available to students, including volleyball, basketball, cross-country running and track and field. Qualifications And Experience

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
  • Qualifications and demonstrated ability to teach the identified subjects at the middle years level
  • Experience with universal design and differentiation to meet the diverse needs of students
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, collaboration and organization skills
  • Experience/training/knowledge of Social Emotional Learning. Demonstrated ability to create a positive classroom community contributing to a safe, caring, and healthy school where every student feels a sense of belonging
  • Strong belief in the philosophy of inclusion and the potential of all students to learn
  • Understanding of the BC Curriculum and ability to plan both short-term and long-term in consideration of class composition
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the foundation of enhancing student learning
  • Demonstrated use of classroom management practices that are proactive and maintain student dignity
  • Demonstrated use of assessment practices that promote student learning and maintain student dignity
  • Three years related experience working with Indigenous communities and schools around the academics and social emotional well being of Indigenous students
  • Providing tutorial support in 1:1 setting, small group and in classrooms - emphasis on core subjects predominately math and literacy
  • Demonstrated successful experience with numeracy instruction
  • Discuss with other teachers preferential student's scheduling (fewer teachers, teacher/class matching, peer-pairing, etc.)
  • Regularly monitor student attendance and learning programs
  • Identity and monitor student’s development through: Response to Intervention (RTI) model and other effective educational strategies such as, Learning Journeys and District Mitigation Plan
  • Delegate students to the Indigenous Support Team for academic and SEL support
  • Acknowledging student's successes and growth
  • All "supplementary student service" must be documented in Insight
  • Comprehensive planning for reentry to school for those students who have been withdrawn or suspended. Continuous follow-up of these vulnerable students
  • Connect and bridge students with community resources and supports
  • Ability to work independently and with Indigenous Support Team and Dr. Kearney staff.
  • Organize, schedule, co-create agenda for weekly Indigenous team meetings
  • Liaison with wraparound supports (school, home, community agencies, urban Indigenous organizations and our three local First Nations)
  • Work collaboratively with the school, parents and First Nations communities to develop strategies that ensure all Indigenous students clearly understand the courses and subsequent grades they must attain to attend the college or training program of their choice
  • Oral and written fluency in an Indigenous language would be an asset
  • Valid BC drivers license, local travel will require the use of a personal vehicle
  • Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry
  • Other Duties as per assigned by the District Indigenous Principal

  • Verification of qualifications (BC Teacher Certificate)

Compensation

  • $2000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas
  • $3,035 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
  • Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $65,397 - $111,952
  • Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enroll in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE
