Job description

Position Description

A temporary full time (1.0) Secondary Teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective immediately until the return of the incumbent but not beyond June 30, 2025. The assignment will be at the Key Learning Centre.

This position will focus on supporting students with the Distance/Online Learning context. Duties will include advising enrollment consistent within Graduation 2023 guidelines, at home course support, student tutorial, as well as tracking and reporting student progress.

The Key Learning Centre (KLC) is a Provincial Online Learning School (POLS) providing online learning to students within School District No. 60 and throughout the province of British Columbia.. As an alternative to traditional 'brick & mortar' schools we offer asynchronous, flexibly scheduled educational programming via an online delivery model.

The KLC has a staffing complement of nine teachers, nine support staff (clerical, EA, LAT, tech support) and administration. The staff is very innovative and takes full advantage of technologies to bridge distances and create an effective, vibrant social learning environment. Qualifications and Experience

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
  • Qualifications and demonstrated ability to teach the identified subjects
  • Experience with universal design and differentiation to meet the diverse needs of students
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, collaboration and organization skills
  • Experience/training/knowledge of Social Emotional Learning. Demonstrated ability to create a positive classroom community contributing to a safe, caring, and healthy school where every student feels a sense of belonging
  • Strong belief in the philosophy of inclusion and the potential of all students to learn
  • Understanding of the BC Curriculum and ability to plan both short-term and long-term in consideration of class composition
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the foundation of enhancing student learning
  • Demonstrated use of classroom management practices that are pro-active and maintain student dignity
  • Demonstrated use of assessment practices that promote student learning and maintain student dignity
  • Qualifications and demonstrated ability to teach at the secondary school level and have prior experience or training in teaching using Online Learning (OL) methods.
  • A working knowledge of, or be willing to quickly learn, the technology needed to deliver the online portion of an educational program. (ie. Zoom Whiteboard, D2L Brightspace, FileMaker, Adobe Acrobat, social media channels.)
  • An understanding and commitment to the secondary school philosophy and willingness to adapt that philosophy to a OL environment
  • Knowledge of OL course offerings and procedures would be an asset
  • Aware of BC MoECC Secondary School Curriculum and be able to realize the Ministry of Education initiatives dealing with 21st Century and personalized learning in an OL environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well with students, parents and staff members in both face to face and online environments
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a partnership with parents / home facilitators
  • A willingness to incorporate a variety of online learning strategies aligned with best practice current in the online learning field
  • The ability to design a course of study for students on an open learning program or students requiring an IEP
  • The ability to carry out a variety of assessments including classroom observation, administration and interpretation of norm-referenced tests, curriculum based assessment and diagnostic teaching methods in an OL environment.
  • A commitment to work with parents in the development and evaluation of a child’s learning program and progress
  • Ability to use online technology in the instructional process and reporting procedures
  • Willing to explore and use technology in a transformative way to improve the students educational experience (as defined by the SAMR model for example.) Previous experience in the use of transformative educational technology would be a compelling asset
  • A working knowledge of Criterion Based Referencing Assessment and Performance Based Assessment, Balanced Literacy, and blended/structured writing process, and the SMARTLearning process
  • Be willing to learn about and explore new and tried ways of helping students learn effectively and personally in an OL environment
  • Be committed to continuous professional learning

  • Verification of qualifications (BC Teacher Certificate)

Compensation

  • $2000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas
  • $3,035 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
  • Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $65,397-$111,952
  • Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enroll in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE
