Job summary

CSA Group in Canada is seeking a skilled Laboratory Equipment Technician to plan, build, and maintain unique test equipment while providing cost and scheduling input to meet project deadlines. You will work with senior technologists to support technical staff in selecting, setting up, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.

The role involves repairs, diagnostics, calibration, and documentation across electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic testing setups.

Qualifications

  • Experience in laboratory, metrology, or related field is preferred.
  • Creative, design, and problem‑solving talent is expected.
  • Experience with laboratory environments is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains laboratory equipment and analyzes faults.
  • Works with minimal supervision to troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Contacts manufacturers for parts, service information and quotes.
  • Designs and modifies laboratory test equipment and data acquisition systems.
  • Prepares diagrams, parts lists, and operating instructions.
  • Performs calibration and selects appropriate instruments to minimize errors.
  • Monitors equipment performance and troubleshoots test systems.
  • Provides guidance to staff and helps train junior personnel.
  • May assist with routine purchases and scheduling decisions.

Job Summary

Under direction of the Lab Infrastructure Manager or Product Group Manager, this role plans, builds, and maintains unique test equipment and provides cost and scheduling information to meet project deadlines and budgets. The incumbent works independently or with a Senior Technologist to support technical staff in selecting, setting up, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.

Job Responsibilities
  • Repairs and maintains laboratory equipment; analyzes symptoms, performs diagnostic troubleshooting, identifies malfunctions, and corrects faults.
  • Works with minimal supervision, applying principles of operation to equipment problem‑solving and records details of work performed.
  • Contacts manufacturers for information on parts, service techniques, and equipment data; prepares requisitions for outside repairs, components, tools, and service calls required for maintenance and projects.
  • Designs, constructs, and modifies laboratory test equipment and data acquisition systems; records and files construction and modification details, updates existing drawings and records, and generates documentation for laboratory equipment.
  • Evaluates work requests or specifications; prepares diagrams, layouts, parts lists, and operating instructions.
  • Performs necessary adjustments and service of measuring instruments and equipment for calibration; analyzes and selects proper instruments, tools, materials, and methods to reduce errors to specified limits.
  • Monitors performance of laboratory equipment, troubleshoots, and analyzes test systems, including electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic testing equipment.
  • Provides technical guidance to technical staff and safely operates a wide variety of tools and measuring equipment.
  • Assists with the orientation and training of new or junior staff, as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including making decisions on routine purchases and design/timetable commitments with occasional managerial direction.
  • Orders samples, parts, and tools; maintains records; creates test jigs; and identifies opportunities to automate testing for increased throughput.
Education & Experience
  • 3‑year Technical Diploma (OACETT) or equivalent.
  • 2–4 years of experience in laboratory, metrology, or related field.
  • Working knowledge of physics, mathematics, and the desire to apply it.
  • Creative, design, and problem‑solving talent.
  • Experience with laboratory or metrology environments is an asset.
  • Experience with programmable controllers is an asset.
  • Experience with automation languages (LabVIEW, Python, C) is an asset.
  • Electrical and industrial safety training is an asset.
