We are hiring a full-time permanent Engineering Technologist position working out of Edmonton, AB. Current EPCOR Employees please ensure that you are using your “@epcor.com” email address.

Reporting to the Manager, Downtown Distribution Engineering, the Engineering Technologist will apply technical skill and experience in the preparation of detailed electrical and civil designs for underground, network, and overhead distribution systems up to 25kV in the Downtown area. The Engineering Technologist must understand how to design with constraints given the civil asset requirements of Downtown electrical distribution systems as well as utility coordination constraints. In addition, the Engineering Technologist must have an understanding of principles of electricity and supporting structures and have the ability to perform calculations for design and set guidelines for drafting. All designs must abide by City of Edmonton, EPCOR and any related standards, policies and guidelines.

What You’d be responsible for
  • Complete detailed designs for civil and electrical Downtown and Network system projects such as vault and manhole rebuilds, relocations and extensions, network conversions, and network transformer replacements.
  • Provide technical input to plans, milestones, and direction with respect to civil and electrical projects assigned to the Downtown Engineering team and ensure ongoing appropriate relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Prepare design and construction packages for Downtown Engineering and Network design projects using customer-required software including Electric Office and IVARA.
  • Provide detailed cost estimates to project managers, contractors, customers, and accounting staff to ensure project budgets are accurate and are given within the allotted project time frames.
  • Perform field visits to ensure design standards are met and are in compliance with the Alberta Electrical Utility Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, and EPCOR Distribution Standards.
  • Provide technical assistance to project managers, contractors, junior employees, field crews, and customers for the purposes of conforming to the Canadian Electrical Code, the Alberta Electrical Utility Code, and EPCOR Distribution Standards.
  • Regularly review design and drafting standards and templates and propose relevant changes.
  • Coordinate work with project managers, drafters, field crews, contractors, and customers for various projects taking place within the Downtown Engineering boundaries.
  • Obtain all required permitting and approvals necessary for construction including easement, Ministerial Consent, Railway Crossing, Utility Line Assignment (ULA), pipeline crossing/proximity agreements, etc.
  • Specify, review and mark for changes detailed structural or electrical drawings including schematics, profiles, site drawings, circuit layouts, cadastral plans, etc.
  • Communicate courteously and effectively with customers or consultants by telephone, email, letter, and in person.
  • Perform engineering calculations relevant to Downtown and Network distribution systems.
  • Ensure all designs are in compliance with the Alberta Electrical Utility Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, and EPCOR Distribution Standards.
  • Demonstrate high performance, high discipline, safe work practice, ownership, and accountability.
What’s required to be successful
  • Successful completion of a post-secondary Diploma in Electrical or Civil Engineering Technology, from a recognized technical institute.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Technologist with A.S.E.T.
  • Registration as P.L.(Eng) with APEGA will be considered an asset.
  • 7 to 10 years of directly related experience, preferably in a Distribution electric utility.
  • Broad knowledge of industry safety practices and familiarity with applicable safety regulations.
  • Demonstrable understanding of electrical and underground principles.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of products such as Word and Excel.
  • Experience with network electrical distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with civil assets used in network distribution systems.
  • Valid Alberta Driver's License, with no more than 6 demerits. A Driver abstract will be required.
  • Knowledge of design and drafting standards for distribution electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of work management systems such as IVARA.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Network electrical systems as well as related supporting civil assets.
