Department: Water and Waste, Solid Waste Services Division

Designated Work Location: 1120 Waverley Street, On site

Position Type: Permanent, 35 hrs/per week, Full-time

Hours of Work: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday

Salary: $1,897.24 - $2,349.17 as per the Technologist 1 classification within the C.U.P.E Collective Agreement

Job Profile

Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Environmental Monitoring and Reporting, the Technologist assists in evaluating safety and environmental conditions at landfills, focusing on landfill gas, liquids, surface water, and groundwater management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor environmental conditions at landfills and surrounding areas.
  • Design instrumentation and develop monitoring standards.
  • Perform subsurface investigations and install/maintain instrumentation, including monitoring wells.
  • Conduct inspections, sampling, and testing of instrumentation, buildings, and underground structures.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and materials.
  • Analyze data to identify issues and initiate remedial actions.
  • Develop performance criteria for data evaluation.
  • Evaluate landfill gas, leachate, groundwater, and surface water data.
  • Maintain and update databases and drawings.
  • Review development applications for protective measures.
  • Perform or oversee testing and analysis related to development projects.
  • Stay current with applicable laws, standards, and safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as required to support the division.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate in Technology from a recognized Institute; eligible for C.T.T.A.M. membership as a Civil Technologist (C.E.T.) or A.Sc.T.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of soil mechanics, hydrogeology, earthworks, waste management, and statistical analysis.
  • Proficiency in Windows applications including Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently.
  • Mechanical aptitude with tools and equipment maintenance knowledge.
  • Effective organizational and planning skills.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada and valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Successful Police Information Check.
  • Physical ability to perform field work under various weather conditions.
