Job description

Title: Stage Technician

Organizational Unit | Sector: Faculty of Arts | School of Theater

The UQAM School of Theater, located in the heart of Montreal's cultural scene, is a place of research and creation training. We educate artists, designers, performers, scenographers, theater studies scholars, contemporary puppet theater practitioners, and drama education professionals from undergraduate to graduate levels. Our dedicated team of professionals supports student learning and the realization of diverse artistic projects.

Employment Group: Technical

Status: Regular full-time

Work Schedule: Intermittent full-time (36 weeks) - Regular 35 hours/week; schedule from Monday to Friday, with evenings and weekends depending on productions

Education: College diploma (DEC) in professional theater (scenic techniques)

Experience: Two (2) years of relevant experience

Other:

  • Knowledge of technical components of the performing arts: Lighting, sound, video projection, and stage machinery. A test will assess these skills.
  • Knowledge of CAD software is an asset.

This person provides technical support during cultural and social events and educational activities under supervision, supporting the technical aspects related to the performing arts.

Detailed Job Tasks (indicative):

  • Participate in planning and evaluating the needs related to the performing arts; advise clients on the technical feasibility of their projects; prepare and adapt technical plans and documents based on submitted projects.
  • Operate as an lighting technician, sound technician, or projectionist according to directives from the organizer or their representative; recommend modifications to solve technical constraints and implement necessary corrections.
  • Install, verify, adjust, tune, and calibrate stage equipment; program and operate sound, lighting, recording, and broadcasting devices during rehearsals, performances, conferences, and events.
  • Install or modify scenic devices such as scenery and accessories.
  • Ensure technical quality standards for the performing arts are met.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and perform daily maintenance and basic repairs; send defective devices for repair.
  • Communicate with suppliers for catalogs, pricing, or technical information; test new products and advise on equipment choices.
  • Provide technical support to students by explaining device operation and assisting during operational issues.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, municipal, and governmental safety rules.
  • Keep technical documentation up to date; participate in training sessions to stay current with new technologies.
  • Operate various devices such as projectors, lighting consoles, sound systems, motorized curtains, recorders, audio mixers, saws, drills, and mobile lifts.
  • May be called upon to train new technicians, lead support staff, collaborate on training, assign work, verify execution, and provide input during notation.
  • Perform temporarily related or lower-level tasks when required.
