Overview

As a military member, the surgical techniciennes are responsible for providing a sterile environment for surgical procedures both in static settings (within the country) and operational environments (on missions). They are full members of the surgical team, providing perioperative care, assisting surgeons and anesthesiologists, and applying orthopedic casts during surgeries. They are also responsible for reprocessing medical instruments and handling surgical materials and instruments.

Their main responsibilities include:

  • Providing a clean and safe environment for patient treatment and assisting surgeons and anesthesiologists at all stages of surgical procedures
  • Ensuring the proper functioning of equipment, providing on-site training on operations, and supervising operating rooms on the field
  • Contributing to patient recovery post-anesthesia
  • Decontaminating, cleaning, maintaining, and stocking materials and instruments, including packaging and sterilizing surgical tools
  • Using and maintaining medical and resuscitation equipment
  • Documenting, updating, and sharing medical records, reports, and summaries
  • Managing inventory, supplies, and reporting stock levels of medical and general supplies

Work Environment

The techniciennes de bloc opératoire typically work mainly in civilian hospitals within military surgical teams. They may also join civilian teams in Canada or be deployed abroad. Usually, they work regular hours from Monday to Friday, but shifts or on-call work may be required depending on circumstances.

If you choose a career in the Regular Force, you will be assigned to your first base after completing the required training. While there is some flexibility regarding postings, not all requests can be accommodated, so relocation is possible during your career. If you enlist in the Reserve Force, you will serve through a specific reserve unit, working part-time, usually one evening a week and some weekends, with the possibility of full-time employment.

Subsidized Education and Training Program (PIESMR)

Since this position requires specialized training, the Canadian Forces will cover tuition fees for recruits enrolled in an approved college program. Students in PIESMR undertake basic military training and summer on-the-job training. Full-time salary includes medical and dental care, paid vacations, and full salary. In exchange for the college subsidy, candidates commit to serving in the Forces for a specified period. To participate, you must apply to both the Forces and the appropriate college.

Training

The first step is the Basic Military Qualification Course, offered at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. This course teaches basic skills and common knowledge for all military jobs, including physical training to maintain Force standards.

The training comprises four modules: a two-year practical nursing science program at a recognized Canadian institution, a six to eight-month course for licensed practical nurses in the operating room at Algonquin College or Grant MacEwan University, a 1,500-hour on-the-job training program covering orthopedic surgery, general surgery, and other specialties, and a focus on surgical services in the field.

After completing the basic professional qualification training, you will undertake a medical instrument reprocessing course.

Advanced orthopedics training for auxiliary nurses covers advanced cast application and orthopedic device maintenance.
