Apex Utilities Inc. is hiring a Technician Trainee, Distribution Operations in Athabasca. The role offers hands-on training with progression to Technician over the first three years, including on-call duties to handle natural gas emergencies.

The successful candidate will join a unionized operations team, start with the Year 1 trainee wage and advance as you gain experience in pipeline operations and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Gas Utilities Operator course (company will train) is preferred.
• Three years in related field, including one year performing operations functions in a natural gas utility.
• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license with clean abstract.
• Ability to meet physical requirements.

Wages: Year 1 - Progressive Trainee Wage Range: $38.59– $41.75 per hour.

Year 2 – 4 – Progressive Technician Wage Range: $43.75 - $46.32 per hour.

What You Will Do:

In this unionized position of Technician Trainee, Distribution Operations, you will play an essential role within our Operations team. This position is designed for individuals interested in building a long-term career in the natural gas utility industry through hands-on training, field experience, and progressive skill development. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Efficiently operating and maintaining natural gas pipeline systems;
• Ensuring all required documentation is completed on time as required by regulations;
• Responding to natural gas related emergencies;
• Performing construction tasks as per policies and procedures; and
• Representing the Company to customers and the public.
• This position requires on call duties on a rotational basis to respond to natural gas related emergencies.

What You Will Bring:

• High School Diploma or equivalent;
• Gas Utilities Operator course (Company will train); Three years in a related field, of which one year involves performing the operations functions of a natural gas utility (this includes experience in construction, pipeline operations, municipal services, heavy equipment operation);
• Valid Province of Alberta Class 5 driver’s license;
• A clean driver's abstract is also required for this position; and
• Ability to perform all necessary physical requirements.

Note: The successful candidate will be required to live within 30 minutes’ driving time from our Athabasca District Office to respond to natural gas-related emergencies.

Preferred skills and qualifications:

• Mechanical aptitude and dexterity when using tools, equipment, and instruments;
• Utility line locating experience is considered an asset;
• Gas fitting experience is considered an asset;
• Good communication skills, decision making skills and a strong work ethic;
• Ability to establish good working relationships and provide excellent customer service;
• Proficiency working with various computer software systems including Microsoft Office suite;
• Good judgment and maintain motivation and performance when working independently and;
• Safe work habits and adherence to safety regulations.
