About The Kemess Mine

Kemess is located in north-central British Columbia, approximately 250 km north of Smithers and 430 km northwest of Prince George, with fly-in access. The property is host to the former Kemess South (KS) Mine, the Kemess Underground (KUG) deposit, and the Kemess East (KE) deposit.

Existing on-site infrastructure includes offices, warehouse, laydowns, maintenance facilities, a 300-person accommodation camp footprint, crushed ore stockpile and reclaim, access and service roads, an airstrip, explosives magazines, and an electrical substation.

Kemess Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a full-time Technician, Tailings to join our Kemess Mine operations site.

This is a camp-based position, with a rotation of 14 days on / 14 days off, with a 12-hour daily schedule.

Reporting to the Site Services Supervisor and with dotted line reporting to the Director, Geotechnical and Tailings, the Technician, Tailings will be responsible for implementing and managing programs associated with maintenance, operation, monitoring, and reporting obligations at Kemess Mine Tailings Facility.

Your Responsibilities Will Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Implement the site construction and stability monitoring, and management plans with oversight from the Engineer-of-Record and support from Tailings Director.
  • Complete inspections of Embankment Dam, instruments, and surface water management structures as outlined in the Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance (OMS) manual.
  • Coordinate, schedule, perform and manage geotechnical field investigations.
  • Perform on-site construction monitoring or inspections.
  • Report and document finding as per best practices and as dictated by permits and management plans and update these documents when necessary.
  • Ensure the site quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) programs during construction are implemented, review and examine the quality, collection, and proper management of samples and construction data, and make adjustments to field techniques as required.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) to ensure proper field procedures are adhered to, providing geotechnical training to the field staff where necessary.
  • Access monitoring locations by hiking, snowshoeing, driving, and snowmobiling in a mountain environment with variable weather conditions.
  • Work safely in variable terrain and mitigate risks posed by bears and other wildlife.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues relating instruments, equipment, and compliance.
  • Maintain and keep inventory of all monitoring equipment, including scheduling and performing internal/external calibrations, ordering replacement equipment and parts, and ensuring adequate resources are available to maintain compliance with support from consultants and the Tailings Director.
  • Inspect contractors and consultants performing work for the site services and ensure construction compliance of contractors.
  • Respond promptly to non-compliances identified through inspections and assist other departments in compliance with site environmental policies and permit conditions.
  • Assist with the implementation of the site reclamation and vegetation strategy, closure plan, and environmental monitoring of site reclamation activities with support from other departments.
  • Implement erosion control measures with assistance from Environmental Monitors.
  • Identify and plan mitigations for potential impacts to construction quality, water quality or land disturbance from projects with support from other departments, EOR and the Tailings Director.
  • Support the Technical Services in compiling data for the purpose of writing routine and annual regulatory reports.
  • Other related duties and tasks as assigned by the Supervisor.

About You

To qualify for this role, the following skillset and experience will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or another relevant field of study preferred.
  • A sense of urgency when responding to dam safety and environmental risks on site.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical field investigations, slope design and analysis and surveillance of geotechnical structures, including be not limited to Vibrating Wire Piezometers, Slope Inclinometers, Drone Surveys and ASTM Testing Standards.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel and Word skills.
  • Attention to detail in data management and record keeping.
  • Strong communicator who gets along well with field staff and management.
  • Self-reliance and could work and manage the field team independently with minor input from Supervisors.
  • Proactive in planning work, identifying risks to safety or the operation of equipment, and tracking the completion of tasks.
  • Interest in continued personal development and improved understanding of the regulatory landscape in mining.
