Job summary

Rio Tinto’s Strathcona Production Plant in Edmonton seeks a Process Technician to drive safe, reliable operations and environmental compliance across the site. You’ll lead process optimisation and coordinate with operations and technical teams to improve safety, quality, yield and cost performance.

The role offers opportunities to grow in process operations, with technical leadership and continuous improvement initiatives in a heavy industrial setting.

Qualifications

  • Experience in large-scale industrial environments (processing/manufacturing).
  • Diploma in Process Technology or related disciplines.
  • Experience using Excel, PI ProcessBook, HMI for performance analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Optimize process performance across plant operations.
  • Monitor conditions and collect data to support stability and improvements.
  • Investigate deviations and implement reliability improvements.
  • Analyze data and prepare reports for decision-making.
  • Improve process designs and operating practices while ensuring SOPs.
  • Deliver technical training to operators and maintenance staff.
  • Coordinate assurance activities for licensing, testing and monitoring.
  • Support scoping, commissioning and start-up with laboratory performance focus.

About The Role

We are looking for a Process Technician to help the Strathcona Production Plant deliver safe, reliable and compliant production outcomes. In this role, you'll coordinate process optimisation and environmental compliance activities across the site, contributing to improvements in safety, quality, yield, cost performance and operational reliability. Working as part of a collaborative operations and technical team, you'll provide technical leadership, support continuous improvement initiatives and play a key role in maintaining the performance and compliance of a complex industrial processing facility.

What You’ll Be Doing

Reporting to the Strathcona Manager, you will

  • Optimize process performance by identifying opportunities to improve cycle time, yield, unit cost, product quality, safety and regulatory compliance across plant operations.
  • Monitor process conditions, instrumentation and critical equipment, collecting and analyzing operational data to support process stability and continuous improvement.
  • Investigate process, instrumentation and control system deviations, identifying root causes and implementing solutions to improve reliability and performance.
  • Analyze operational and laboratory data, preparing reports, trend analyses and recommendations that support informed decision-making and plant performance objectives.
  • Improve process designs, operating practices and facility utilization while maintaining compliance with standard operating procedures and quality requirements.
  • Deliver technical training and guidance to operators and maintainers on process-critical systems and environmental abatement equipment.
  • Coordinate technical assurance activities that support operating license compliance, including stack testing, groundwater monitoring, soil monitoring, water management and waste management programs.
  • Support project scoping, operational assurance, commissioning and start-up activities while providing technical assurance for laboratory performance and reporting.

Required for Success
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Ability to interpret process data, identify performance trends and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
  • Advanced experience in processing, manufacturing, refining, smelting, petrochemical, energy or another large-scale industrial environment.
  • Post-secondary diploma in Process Technology, Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, Industrial Operations or a related discipline.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, PI ProcessBook, Human Machine Interface (HMI) and process monitoring systems to analyze performance, identify trends and support operational decision-making.
Helpful for Success
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, process control principles or continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Exposure to programming, automation or process control systems.

Rio Tinto’s Strathcona Production Plant is a part of the Atlantic Operations of the Aluminum product group.

Our Alberta facility is focused on results and for over 50 years we have been playing a part of the global aluminum industry. This facility is responsible for turning byproducts from oil refineries into key ingredients for one of our widely used metals. High quality green petroleum coke (GPC) is purchased from our partners and turned it into anode grade calcined coke for use in the aluminum smelting process.
