Rio Tinto IOC in Labrador City is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support Technical Services, maintaining and developing engineering standards, reviewing designs, and providing technical leadership across the project lifecycle in a heavy industrial mining setting.

This on-site, residential role includes relocation assistance where applicable and requires collaboration with operations, maintenance and project teams to deliver safe, practical and cost-effective engineering solutions while

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with a Power Engineering specialization.
• Professional Engineer registration with PEGNL or eligibility to obtain it.
• Experience in heavy industrial/mining utilities with medium- and low-voltage systems, protection and control.

Responsibilities

• Provide operational support for electrical system issues and improvements.
• Lead technical reviews of project designs for capital sustaining projects.
• Provide technical leadership on electrical studies and asset improvements across the project lifecycle.
• Ensure engineering standards, maintainability, and operational requirements are integrated in designs.
• Oversee single-line diagrams, ETAP models, and relay setting files.
• Provide onboarding and training on IOC standards and practices.
• Deliver stamped engineering packages including P&IDs and electrical schematics.

We are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to support Technical Services by maintaining, developing and implementing engineering standards, systems and tools that enhance the reliability, safety and performance of our operations. This role provides the opportunity to apply technical expertise to complex engineering challenges, evaluate project options and influence the long‑term performance of electrical assets. The role is based in Labrador and is a residential role; fly‑in/fly‑out is not available. Relocation assistance is provided if applicable.

Reporting to the Superintendent Technical Services and working in a challenging and rewarding environment, you will collaborate with operational, maintenance and project teams to deliver safe, practical and cost‑effective engineering solutions.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Independently provide operational support for electrical system issues and change improvements
• Independently provide technical support for electrical upgrades driven by operations and capital projects
• Conduct independent technical reviews of project designs and deliverables for capital sustaining projects
• Provide technical leadership on electrical engineering studies, asset improvements and sustaining capital projects across the full project lifecycle.
• Provide technical expertise ensuring engineering standards, maintainability, and operational requirements are integrated into project designs and executions
• Oversee and maintain Single Line Diagrams, ETAP Model and Relay Setting File
• Provide onboarding and training for new team members on IOC standards, systems and practices
• Provide stamped engineering packages for self designed or department‑led scopes including procurement packages, P&IDs, single line diagrams, control network diagrams and electrical schematics.
• Review internal engineering packages for technical accuracy and completeness

Required For Success

• A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with a specialization in Power Engineering.
• Professional Engineer registration with PEGNL, or eligibility to obtain registration.
• Demonstrated electrical engineering experience in heavy industrial, mining, mineral processing, utilities, or similarly complex operational environments, with strong expertise in medium‑and‑low‑voltage power distribution systems, motor protection and control, protective relaying, MCCs, switchgear, transformers, and VFD applications.
• Experience leading complex electrical engineering work, providing technical guidance and quality review of engineering outputs, and exercising professional judgement on plant electrical systems.

Helpful for Success

• Experience supporting iron ore processing facilities, railway infrastructure and/or port operations.
• Experience with medium‑and high‑voltage power systems, including substations, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, motor control, VFDs, and protective relaying.
• Experience developing and reviewing electrical engineering deliverables, including single‑line diagrams, schematics, specifications, and technical bid evaluations.
• Experience supporting brownfield projects, commissioning activities, and the integration of new equipment into operating facilities.
• Familiarity with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA and IEEE standards, and engineering tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks.
