Job Summary

The Technician, Exhibition & Outreach will support the work of Toronto History Museums—a collection of 10 sites owned and operated by the City of Toronto with the mission to collect, preserve, research, interpret, exhibit, and enhance the understanding of Toronto’s diverse stories through engaging and exciting experiences.

This position supports the day-to-day operations of the Toronto History Museums’ overall exhibition program at the Market Gallery and various other museum sites, through exhibition planning, production, installation, and maintenance. Working closely with the Supervisor, Exhibitions and Outreach, the position also supports initiatives related to City’s art collection.

Major Responsibilities

  • Assists with the production and installation phases of exhibit development, including selecting exhibit hardware and mounts (frames, cases, mannequins, lighting, and other specialized materials)
  • Co-ordinates exhibit production, liaising with lenders and contractors, as well as ordering supplies
  • Performs maintenance and monitors exhibits and displays
  • Prepares content and compiles information materials tours designed for a wide range of visitors, including, university students and adult visitor groups and makes modifications to content according to the group's needs.
  • Conducts research in City Archives, and external gallery, library, archives, and museum databases.
  • Coordinates with museum administration to develop and deliver outreach strategies for a wide range of visitors, ensuring a quality Toronto History Museums presence at public programs, events, and festivals.
  • Develops prospective outreach lists for exhibit openings, receptions, educational outreach and other groups, e.g. senior citizens, arts and cultural groups such as primary school students, university students and adult visitor groups.
  • Co-ordinates the loan of exhibits to other facilities and advises them on transportation, exhibit display.
  • Responds to visitor and external inquiries about exhibits and programs.
  • Administers visitor experience questionnaires and prepares written recommendations on how to improve exhibits and programs.

Key Qualifications

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in Museum Studies, Museum Management, History or Studio Art, or the approved equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience in artifact care, exhibit preparation or exhibit installation.
  • Experience conducting museum research and summarizing information.
  • Possession of a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License.

You Must Also Have

  • Ability to qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements and to maintain same.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to deliver presentations to a wide range of museum visitors.
  • Well developed human relation skills, with the ability to make initial contacts with various organizations and community groups, including the media.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to meet and respond to staff and the public in an efficient, diplomatic and professional manner.
  • Ability to develop and deliver public programs for museums or galleries.
  • Excellent organization skills to work within precise time constraints and carry out instructions with little supervision.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations as required.
  • Ability to support Toronto Public Service values and a workplace culture that champions equity, diversity, and inclusion.
