JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Technician, Breeding & Genetics Co-op student to join our team at Aurora Coast, our cannabis breeding and research facility located in beautiful Comox, BC. This role offers hands-on experience in both laboratory and greenhouse settings, supporting a range of breeding and molecular biology research activities. The Technician, Breeding & Genetics Co-op student will support plant phenotyping, molecular lab work, and greenhouse operations. This includes tasks such as DNA/RNA extraction, genotyping, sample preparation, plant care, and cultivation monitoring. The student will also participate in data entry, statistical analysis, and interpretation of research results, gaining exposure to biotechnology tools and breeding strategies relevant to crop improvement. This is a unique opportunity to develop technical skills, contribute to meaningful research projects, and learn within a collaborative, innovative environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow laboratory and cultivation protocols, keep accurate records of the work performed and prepare reports with the data generated.
  • Conduct plant phenotyping tasks and protocols, including measuring plant height, biomass, yield, and image collection and analysis.
  • Support genotyping activities including extraction DNA and RNA from plant tissues, and quality control on isolated nucleic acids.
  • Prepare lab reagents, materials, buffers, and solutions to support molecular biology experiments.
  • Assist in greenhouse activities including plant care, propagation, and cultivation monitoring as needed.
  • Participate in data entry, statistical analysis and interpretation of results under guidance of Scientists.
  • Contribute to ongoing research projects by assisting with sample collection, labeling, and organization.
  • Support quality and compliance by adhering to SOPs and other standards.
  • Collaborate with team members in both laboratory and greenhouse settings to ensure timely completion of research tasks.
  • Gain exposure to biotechnological tools and breeding strategies relevant to crop improvement.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Enrolled as a full-time or part-time student at a Canadian post-secondary education institution.
  • Experience with plants and plant management, particularly in a greenhouse or nursery.
  • Technical training or experience with greenhouse management, horticulture or related tasks is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of the life cycle of cannabis.
  • Ability to work in environments with cannabis pollen and plant debris.
  • Ability to work hard and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
  • Able to comfortably lift 22 kilograms.
  • Ability to undertake repetitive work.
