Qualifications

Position Overview

Responsible for the inspection of pipelines for corrosion and wear using visual inspection, measuring instruments and other testing methods.

Responsibilities
  • Travels across the province to monitor and test cathodic protection systems in accordance with established maintenance programs.
    • Develops plans in accordance with standard specifications and/or drawings, maintains and installs or arranges for the installation of standard cathodic protection systems.
    • Inspects to ensure driller meets contract specifications during the installation of deep anode beds.
    • Initiates a pre-job meeting to review work practices, environmental obligations. Co-ordinates delivery of materials and work with external contractors and construction crews.
  • Compares and analyses cathodic protection measurements against specified criteria to identify and record areas where a criteria is not met in accordance with Canadian Standards Association Z662, OCC1, Corrosion Control Industry Practices, National Association of Corrosion Engineers and FortisBC Gas Standards.
  • Utilizes specialized equipment to assess cathodic protection monitoring and troubleshooting data where a specified cathodic protection criteria is not met; recommends and implements solutions (e.g. underground shorts, anode failures, rectifier failures, etc.) using direct assessment techniques such as close-interval survey, coating conductance surveys, and current mapping survey and analysis. Initiates, installs, maintains, troubleshoots/identifies and /or repairs /replaces Remote Monitoring Units.
  • Investigates, analyzes and assesses magnitude and source of alternating and direct current electrical interference. Conducts surveys and analyzes and interprets readings to determine impact on cathodic protection and safety of FortisBC personnel and general public. Prepares reports of findings.
  • Responds to FortisBC crews, municipality, or contractor calls to provide information and guidance regarding the cathodic protection system (i.e. digging to locate and correct faults, checking anodes, electrical insulators, rectifiers, or identifying pipeline locations, High Voltage Alternating Current problems).
  • Inputs, extracts, maintains and/or updates data from the Corrosion data management system, Digitized Construction Record System and Automated Mapping / Facilities Management computerized record and mapping systems. Utilizes software applications to prepare spreadsheets, reports, graphs, etc. to document and analyze findings.
  • Reviews, prepares and initiates repair procedures by preparing instructions on work orders for self and others; monitors the completion of repair within established timeframes.
  • Acts as a representative of FortisBC in responding to customer queries when on premises; explains work requirements in accordance with established procedures. Liaises with pipeline companies or municipal personnel to discuss interference problems affecting other pipelines or FortisBC pipelines.
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with established safety rules and regulations and participates in workplace safety initiatives as required.
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties, which do not affect the rating of the job.
Requirements
  • Recognized as a Certified Cathodic Protection Technician (CP2) by the National Association of Corrosion Engineering (N.A.C.E.) and successful completion of Coating Inspection Program Level 2.
  • Seven (7) years directly related experience.
  • Working knowledge of the design, maintenance and operation of cathodic protection systems including corrosion theories and their application to buried pipelines, and DC/AC electrical interference. Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards
  • Working knowledge of computer systems operations, environment and peripherals and various applications software in use in the department (SAP & suite of MS Office products). Ability to type 40 WPM.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize field and office work
  • Ability to analyse information and make sound judgments
  • Mechanical aptitude - ability to operate and perform basic calibration on intricate instrumentation.
  • Valid BC Drivers License including a safe driving record

  • May have exposure to hazardous working conditions such as alternating current voltages, hot meter sets, driving in all weather conditions and heavy lifting, and spends the majority of working hours in the field.
