Job summary

Magna Powertrain in Vaughan is seeking an experienced CNC Machinist to join our team and support the automation-driven manufacturing of advanced powertrain components.

You will coordinate with maintenance, quality, engineering and production teams, train operators, and perform machine setups with attention to safety and quality. A minimum of 2 years in CNC programming and a technical manufacturing background is required.

Qualifications

  • Relevant technical diploma, degree or trade certificate in manufacturing or related discipline within the past five years.
  • Minimum 2 years hands-on experience in CNC programming and setup in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership with clear direction and problem solving; asset if present.
  • Lean manufacturing knowledge applied to improve productivity and performance.
  • Strong troubleshooting and 5 Why root cause analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, maintenance, safety standards.
  • Effective communication with production and staff; English fluent.
  • Self-starter with teamwork, planning and organization; results-oriented.
  • Willing to work flexible shifts, overtime, weekends; respond to emergencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; SAP and Shoplogix is an asset.
  • Experience with robotics (ABB, Fanuc) required.
  • Advance knowledge of machining; prototyping and blueprint reading.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Maintenance, Tool & Die, Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Production teams to support sample parts, troubleshooting activities, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Train and support CNC operators with tooling changes, insert replacements, and offset adjustments.
  • Perform equipment setups, tooling changes, hob changes, machine adjustments, and routine maintenance activities.
  • Identify and recommend process and tooling improvements to increase efficiency, quality, and productivity.
  • Lead Kaizen events and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) activities and monitor equipment effectiveness.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and workplace organization.

Job Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Successfully completed a relevant technical diploma, degree or trade certificate within the past five (5) years directly related to manufacturing, mechatronics, industrial maintenance, automation, controls, CNC, engineering, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, especially relating to CNC Programming and Set-up
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, with strong leadership skills and the ability to make sound decisions, provide clear direction, and effectively solve problems; would be considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing methodologies, with the ability to apply continuous improvement techniques to enhance productivity and performance
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills, with the ability to systematically identify, investigate, and resolve issues using the 5 Why methodology
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, preventative maintenance, and safety standards
  • Ability to prioritize work, coordinate resources, and effectively communicate with production and support staff
  • Able to communicate fluently in English (both written and spoken)
  • Self-starter with strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills, who is results-oriented and able to effectively prioritize and achieve objectives
  • Able to work well in a team environment with the ability to treat everyone fairly
  • Able and willing to work flexible shifts, overtime, and weekends as required, including responding to equipment emergencies, and supporting operational requirements as needed
  • Computer literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of SAP and Shoplogix systems is an asset
  • Previous experience and exposure to robotics (ABB, Fanuc) is required
  • Advance knowledge of machining and proven experience in prototyping and blueprint reading

Key Responsibilities
Technical Effectiveness

Operational Effectiveness
Start Of Shift Activities
  • Review previous shift performance related to safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
  • Adjust staffing and work assignments based on production requirements, absenteeism, and training needs.
  • Conduct floor walks to ensure 5S standards, equipment readiness, and material availability are maintained.
  • Participates in pre-shift Team Member Tier 1 meeting using a standardized agenda
During Shift Operations, You Will
  • Ensure all pre-production safety and quality checks are completed.
  • Respond quickly to operator support requests and production issues.
  • Monitor and update hourly production performance metrics.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues impacting productivity and equipment performance.
  • Support achievement of Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) targets.
  • Fill in temporarily for Team Members that are absent or need to leave the line
  • Monitor TPM effectiveness and elevate any findings to the management team
  • Ensure that the Standardized work is being performed correctly, immediately addresses deviations, identify opportunities for improvement, and documents the results. (Standardized Work Observation compliance)
  • Perform Layered Process Audits (LPA) and Standardized Work observations.
  • Coach and train team members using Training Within Industry (TWI) methodologies.
  • Maintain team training records and competency matrices.
  • Maintain and improve 5S Standards across assigned business unit and production floor (Kaizen activity)
  • Identify deviations in working areas and to continuously solve problems in a structured way.
  • Escalate safety, quality, and production concerns through established processes.
  • Promote teamwork, employee engagement, and positive workplace culture.
End-of-Shift Responsibilities
  • Prepare safety, quality and productivity communication information for next shift
  • Check that 5S, equipment readiness, and material supply conditions are to standard at end of shift.
Team Development & Support
  • Maintenance of L1 board (Hour by Hour Performance, KPI)
  • Team Motivation, Communication and Management (TWI JR) (Providing Information, give Feedback, minimize conflicts etc.)
  • Track and update Team leader Standardized Work sheet
  • Onboard and train new operators.
  • Ensure team members follow standardized work procedures and quality requirements.
  • Collect safety quizzes from all assigned Operators and submit to Employee Advocate monthly
  • Monitor compliance with PPE, safety standards, and operational procedures.
  • Be proactive by providing Operators with the tools they need to do their job before they have to ask for them
  • Practice MSM’s Communicate in 48 Hours policy by responding to Operator concerns, suggestions or inquiries within two business days
  • Foster a respectful and inclusive work environment through effective communication and leadership.
