Position Title: Technical Staff III

Position Summary:
BCIT’s Chemical and Environmental Technology program is seeking applications for a regular, part-time (0.8 FTE) Technical Staff III. This role supports laboratory operations across all courses within the diploma program and ensures students have the necessary technical support to achieve learning objectives.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Under supervision, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  1. Preparing, assembling, and maintaining laboratory apparatus for experiments and coursework.
  2. Preparing and standardizing reagents, materials, and chemicals for laboratory use.
  3. Researching, revising, and improving laboratory procedures to align with current industry practices.
  4. Operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining laboratory equipment specific to chemical analysis, environmental monitoring, and mineral processing.
  5. Demonstrating proper laboratory techniques, safety protocols, and equipment use to students and instructors.
  6. Supporting laboratory sessions across multiple courses, including analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, environmental science, and industrial processing.
  7. Assisting with instrument calibration, data collection, and sample preparation.
  8. Monitoring and maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and consumables.
  9. Implementing and ensuring compliance with safety, waste disposal, and environmental regulations.
  10. Performing quality control checks on laboratory materials and ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures.
  11. Supporting faculty and students in project-based learning, research activities, and applied laboratory investigations.
  12. Assisting in the setup and operation of pilot-scale processing and environmental monitoring systems.
  13. Collaborating with faculty to enhance hands-on learning experiences and technical training.
  14. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  1. Diploma of Technology in Chemical Sciences, Environmental Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Minimum four years of relevant laboratory experience, preferably in chemical analysis, mineral processing, or environmental science.
  3. Strong proficiency in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting analytical instruments (e.g., spectrometers, chromatographs, titration systems), industrial processing equipment, and environmental monitoring tools.
  4. Knowledge and hands-on experience with grinding, pulverizing, separation techniques, and other mineral processing equipment.
  5. Familiarity with waste management protocols, safety standards, and regulatory compliance in chemical laboratories.
  6. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic learning environment.
  7. Effective communication skills for working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.

Salary Range: $68,182 - $81,209 per annum. Additional Salary Information: Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
