Job Description

The Technical Specialist, Pre Analytical - Specimen Procurement and Dispatch is an integrated member of the Laboratory Services team, collaborates closely with laboratory staff and clinical areas to ensure proper patient care. This position will provide technical oversight of the Preanalytical workflow, collaborating as required with other Lab Discipline Technical Specialists and with the Laboratory Leadership team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the overall monitoring of the Pre Analytical department, Quality, TAT and Instrumentation.
  • Provides guidance, training and coaching of new and current staff.
  • Establishes, submits and tracks Staff Proficiency testing.
  • Review the Quality Assurance processes, perform QA audits and initiate corrective actions or continual improvement processes as required.
  • Schedule preventative maintenance and service repairs for equipment and maintain documentation.
  • Compile monthly MIS workload statistics.
  • Member of Laboratory Quality and Safety Committee.
  • Monitors compliance to policy.
  • Provides guidance and follows up with Lab Clerical staff as required.
  • Develops, implements and maintains supporting MLA Policy and Procedures.
  • Ensures MLA training is conducted in accordance with the training program.
  • Provides real time resolution and follow up of any MLA or Clerical issues and complaints, either within the Laboratory or within the Hospital (or off-site locations).
  • Collaborates with other Laboratory Technical Specialists and Clinical Units on MLA matters.
  • Responsible for all IQMH requirements pertaining to Pre Analytical functions.
  • Collaborates closely with Laboratory Leadership.
  • Assist with maintaining inventory control within the Lab Assistant’s area and any other related inventory areas.
  • Provides regularly scheduled bench coverage outside of Administration days - Phlebotomy, Specimen Processing and Dispatch.
  • Assists with MLA scheduling issues.
  • Accountable for discipline specific orientation, training and competency programs.
  • Assist with instrument and procedure validations (as required).
  • Any additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Laboratory Assistant Certificate from a recognized educational institution.
  • Professional certification (CMLTO, CSMLS or equivalent).
  • Current certification for Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG).
  • 5 years or more of current hospital laboratory experience required.
  • Proven understanding of Preanalytical workflows required.
  • Responsible for technical oversight of specimen collection, handling, transportation and storage requirements to ensure specimen acceptability and integrity.
  • Monitors and oversees referred out testing and courier services.
  • Previous experience with project management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills, customer relationship building skills and the ability to interact well with others.
  • Proven interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated service-orientation.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Proven analytic capacity, attention to detail and demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Receptive to new ideas and change.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook.
  • Proven attendance record.
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
  • Understanding of Schedules and scheduling systems preferred.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others.
