What we are looking for:

We have an opportunity for a Technical Safety and Risk Specialist to join our Naval Liaison Office (NLO) to support the delivery of technical safety and risk management work to naval and governmental organizations throughout North, Central and South America.

This position is based out of our office in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is full time for a fixed term (until 30-June-2026) with the possibility of extension to full time permanent employment.

We have flexible working arrangements which allow for a combination of in-office and at-home work.

What you will do:
  1. Provide subject matter expertise in the areas of system safety, safety management and risk management.
  2. Support technical safety and risk management activities ensuring high-quality deliverables that meet contractual and budgetary requirements.
  3. Support clients in the development and implementation of technical safety and risk management policies, guidance and related processes and procedures.
  4. Support clients in activities such as safety (risk) assessments.
  5. Prepare and present technical reports and provide advice and recommendations, where appropriate.
  6. Provide relevant guidance and training, both internally and externally as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
  7. Establish, develop and maintain client relationships, using feedback to continually enhance existing services, processes/ procedures and deliverables.
  8. Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  9. Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline, technical knowledge and industry awareness, including the support of relevant working groups, seminars and conferences, as required.
What you will need:
  1. Eligibility to obtain and maintain a minimum of RELIABILITY security clearance from the Contract Security Program (CSP) and clearance under the Controlled Goods Program (CGP).
  2. A Degree or an equivalent from a recognised tertiary organisation in engineering or physical sciences, or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution with relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
  3. Membership in an appropriate professional institution (or the ability to become a member).
  4. A minimum of 5 years experience in a technical role with a Classification Society, consultancy, or similar organization delivering technical services within defined budgets and timelines. Experience in marine safety/risk management is an asset.
  5. Experience and technical knowledge in safety and risk management techniques, standards, and regulatory requirements for marine environments. Familiarity with ISM Code, ISO 31000, ANEP 77(NSC), MILSTD 882E, and DEFSTAN 0056 is desirable.
  6. Ability to apply general and specialist engineering knowledge to optimize existing and emerging technologies.
  7. Ability to analyze and solve engineering problems using appropriate methods.
  8. Experience in reviewing technical information and producing detailed reports.
  9. Understanding of technical and commercial management processes (e.g., project management, quality management).
  10. Proficiency in English; knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.
  11. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in workshop facilitation is a plus.
  12. Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally as required.
