Job summary

Actalent in Ottawa, ON, is seeking a Technical Documentation & BOM Specialist to inspect test stations, document components, and manage BOMs for new product introductions. You will work with Agile PLM and ensure documentation is production-ready for external manufacturers.

The role requires strong technical writing, attention to detail, and experience with Word templates and PLM systems. This is a contract, onsite position in Ottawa, Canada.

Job Title: Technical Documentation & BOM Specialist

Job Description

The role involves working within a dynamic and innovative environment focused on next-generation high-speed networking technology. The engineer will be responsible for inspecting, documenting, and managing components in test stations, ensuring accurate bills of materials and supporting new product introductions.

Responsibilities

• Physically inspect test stations in the lab.
• Identify and document every component, from nuts and bolts to major equipment.
• Create accurate bills of materials.
• Assign or work with Agile part numbers.
• Upload BOMs and supporting information into Agile.
• Move completed materials through the document-control process.
• Transfer rough engineering content into an existing Microsoft Word template.
• Format, proofread, and mature the documentation for external manufacturing audiences.
• Support new product introductions and updates to existing test stations.

Essential Skills

• Previous experience with Agile PLM, Agile BOMs or a comparable product lifecycle management system.
• Experience in developing, maintaining or reviewing bills of materials.
• Strong technical-writing, documentation, or document-control skills.
• Advanced attention to detail and ability to manage a large number of components.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including formatting and template use.
• Ability to interpret engineering information and convert it into clear documentation.
• Comfortable working directly with physical test stations and engineering equipment in a laboratory environment.
• Strong organizational and proofreading skills.
• Ability to work independently while coordinating with engineers and technical stakeholders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience documenting test stations, manufacturing equipment, laboratory systems, or electromechanical assemblies.
• Familiarity with engineering change, configuration management, or document-release processes.
• Experience transferring Excel-based BOM information into Agile or another PLM system.
• Experience in technical writing, mechanical technology, manufacturing engineering, test engineering, or engineering documentation.
• Experience preparing documentation for contract manufacturers or external manufacturing partners.
• Exposure to new product introduction environments.
• Diploma or degree in mechanical engineering technology, manufacturing, technical communications, or a related discipline. A degree is not required if the candidate can demonstrate relevant Agile, BOM, and technical-documentation experience.

Work Environment

The role is based within the NPI Test engineering team, housed in a 425,000-square-foot campus in the Kanata North Business Park. The facility supports a collaborative environment with over 1,500 employees focused on global telecommunications innovation, including optical research and development and AI network automation.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Ottawa, ON.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $50.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
