Job summary

Canada Life is seeking a Technical Lead to own the vision and execution of a technology portfolio. The role drives lifecycle activities, partners with senior stakeholders, and leads a high-performing team across delivery, adoption, and support.

You will influence technology directions, ensure collaboration, and deliver outcomes aligned with business objectives across Canada Life. This is a full-time position with multiple office locations in Toronto, London, and Winnipeg.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in business or computer science or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 6–9 years' industry experience supporting technology platforms and delivering projects.
  • Agile leadership experience in a technology environment.
  • Ability to lead a high-performance culture and manage ambiguity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication across all levels.
  • Experience in complex, evolving environments with strong governance.

The Technical Lead is a customer first individual accountable for the vision and execution of their portfolio. The role covers all aspects of the software development lifecycle. Success is measured by the team’s collective ability to generate positive results for Canada Life’s business and client objectives. This role will build a partnership with stakeholders in the Business and/or IS units to evolve (imagine new solutions), optimise (increase the impact of existing applications) and stabilise (resolve issues or escalated concerns).

The role will lead and build a high performing and engaged team that supports continuous improvement and growth initiatives.

What you will do

Customer Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain senior level relationships with leaders across multiple groups in the organization, for the purpose of influencing technology directions and promoting effective collaboration
  • Collaborates with multiple business unit leaders across divisions to anticipate and respond to customer inquiries about technology capabilities and service expectations
  • Ensure leaders and team members work together to drive performance and that high expectations are delivered within the values of the organization
  • You will lead a team and manage a complex portfolio with multiple products in a technology environment for the Individual / Advisory Network technology group
  • Create goal clarity, role and accountability clarity, and provide direction on decision rights and accountabilities
  • Lead a team to meet and exceed market‑leading service standards for application support, production and maintenance, and technology services delivery, while ensuring high performance and engagement
  • Identify opportunities (processes, training, systems) to retain and transition knowledge to enhance individual and team effectiveness

Technical Delivery, Adoption, Operations & Support

  • Consult with architects and business leaders on the best strategy and options to Work with business and technology owners, business leads, project managers, other technology leads and subject matter experts to understand WHAT is required, and then own HOW the works gets done
  • Facilitate the development of end‑to‑end solution designs and the identification of impacted applications
  • Define technical design (with architecture patterns and input) and scope of the solution with business and technology alignment across all workstreams / projects / application teams within the scope
  • Offer forward thinking technology strategy, with an end‑to‑end solution from a strategic perspective to project execution and ensure it aligns to enterprise solution
  • Develop solid technology delivery roadmap, view, and plans in partnership with program and project managers
  • Deliver key messages that explain the solution, outline the approach, and defend the options, estimates, and delivery plan
  • Articulate business or technology factors/constraints and pre‑requisites that need to be considered; identify potential areas of concerns with implications factored into the business case
  • Act as first point of contact for technical escalations to the project team, and remove blockers for technical teams to ensure successful delivery
  • Escalate (as appropriate) to sponsor leadership team of any risks and issues along with possible options
  • Engage and collaborate with governance stakeholders to ensure compliance towards corporate risk profile and organizational governance processes
What you will bring
  • Post‑secondary degree/diploma in business or computer science or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 6 to 9 years’ industry related experience supporting technology platforms and delivering projects/products to enable businesses capabilities in the group customer and/or individual customer and advisory network department
  • Agile Leadership experience in a technology environment
  • A Change Leader with experience in driving a high‑performance culture and advocating the culture changes within the business unit
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to hire, inspire, train/develop, performance manage and drive high employee engagement
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and flexibility of approach
  • Strong relationship building and influencing skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to prepare communications and interact effectively with all levels, technical and non‑technical within the organization
  • Demonstrated experience in challenging the status quo and identifying areas of operational improvement (example: people, process, technology)
  • Preference and experience working in a complex environment that rapidly evolving, and ambiguous with high expectations for excellence and achievement
  • Able to be "hands‑on" with support, but also have a strategic / business mindset
  • Experience of working with Agile/DevOps methodology is desirable

Given the size and scope of our organization, we have the flexibility for this position to be located in the following head office locations: Toronto, London, Winnipeg.

The base salary for this position is between $102,000 - $152,000 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).
