Job Profile
Under the supervision of the Natural Resource Coordinator, the Technical Assistant performs semi-technical work assisting in a variety of field, office, and public outreach projects related to the management of natural areas.
As The Technical Assistant, Naturalist Services You Will
- Assist with habitat restoration activities, native plant garden maintenance, and invasive species control across the city to maintain, and enhance the quality of ecosystems and natural areas within Winnipeg.
- Assist with native-plant production by following best practices to produce high quality native plant stock.
- Deliver in-person environmental education programming for groups of all ages to facilitate the public’s connection with nature.
- Assist with volunteer and stewardship group habitat activities in natural areas including the community garden allotment program.
- Assist with biological monitoring, surveys and sampling to inform management decisions and contribute to the Natural Services Branch’s biological database.
Your Education And Qualifications Include
- Completion of a minimum one year in the sciences from a recognized university or technical college such as: biological or environmental sciences.
- Six (6) months experience including but not limited to: landscaping, planting and weed control.
- Experience with habitat management such as invasive species control, planting vegetation and working with volunteers.
- Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
- Willing to obtain a Manitoba Pesticide Applicators Licence (Core with Landscape Module).
- Knowledge of native prairie grasses and wildflowers.
- Knowledge of the native plants and communities in the Winnipeg area.
- Excellent verbal communication skills including the ability to deliver public presentations.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to collect and maintain accurate data and records.
- Ability utilizing hand and power tools (such as shovels, loppers, pumps, cord trimmers etc.) equipment and technical instruments commonly used in natural area maintenance task work.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with diverse groups, including the public.
- Ability to stay organized and prioritize workload.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision.

Conditions Of Employment
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Full Stage Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a valid Notice of Driver’s Licence in Force letter.
- Successful applicant will be required to provide City approved personal protective safety boots at their own expense.
- Must be physically able to perform the duties of this position such as: lift up to 50 lbs., including the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and over uneven terrain, and work outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions.
- Must able to work various shifts including: evenings, weekends, overtime at various locations as required.
- A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer may be required from the applicants or successful candidates, at their expense.
