Job summary

CMHC is seeking a Team Leader for Accounting Operations to guide cash receipt applications, collections, reconciliations, and banking reporting. The role focuses on delivering accurate financial data, improving processes, and supporting strategic business decisions in a complex housing system.

You will develop deep operations knowledge, mentor staff, and drive process improvements across accounting and reporting functions within CMHC.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, business administration, economics, or commerce.
  • Minimum of 3 years in accounting with at least 1 year in supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Experience with financial systems and ERP software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team responsible for cash receipts, cash applications, collections, account reconciliations, banking transactions, and related financial reporting activities.
  • Oversee the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of accounting records, reconciliations, and financial reports, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze complex financial information, identify trends, risks, and opportunities, and provide recommendations that support sound business decision-making.
  • Provide guidance to clients on financial operations, accounting processes, budgeting considerations, and financial controls.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and business leaders, developing a deep understanding of operational needs to deliver value‑added financial insights and solutions.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives by identifying process inefficiencies, implementing innovative solutions, and optimizing accounting, reporting, and operational processes.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of accounting policies, systems, and internal controls, identifying control gaps and recommending corrective actions to strengthen financial governance.
  • Support audits and financial oversight activities by ensuring the timely preparation of reports, analyses, explanations, and supporting documentation.
  • Develop, coach, and empower team members by setting clear expectations, providing ongoing feedback, fostering accountability, and promoting an inclusive and high‑performing work environment.

About The Role

Join the Accounting Operations and Procurement team, in the Team Leader, Cash Management position. In this role, you will lead and manage a team responsible for cash receipt application, collections, account reconciliations, and the reporting of banking transactions. You will provide guidance to clients on financial operating requirements and processes, helping them navigate complex financial matters and enabling informed business decisions. You will develop a deep understanding of business operations through analysis, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement, allowing you to identify financial needs, build trusted relationships, and deliver valuable business insights. As a subject matter expert, you will lead process improvement initiatives to optimize accounting and reporting processes while supporting ongoing transformation and modernization efforts across the organization.

This is a temporary position of a duration of 12 months.

What You’ll Do

What You Should Have
  • An undergraduate degree in a related field such as accounting, finance, business administration, economics, or commerce.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in accounting with a minimum of 1 year of supervisory/ project leadership experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • An extensive knowledge of accounting principles, financial statements, and applicable financial, legislative, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to gather and synthesize complex information and develop practical, well‑supported recommendations.
  • Experience with financial systems and software applications, combined with advanced computer skills and a strong aptitude for leveraging technology to support business objectives.
  • A demonstrated success leading teams, providing coaching and feedback, and fostering a collaborative, accountable, and high‑performing work environment.
  • A proven experience driving process improvements, increasing operational efficiencies, and implementing solutions that support evolving business needs.
  • Exceptional relationship‑building, communication, and client service skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate, and effectively engage stakeholders at all levels of an organization.
It Would Be Great If You Also Had
  • An MBA.
  • A Professional accounting designation (CPA).
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Financial Operations (ERP Software).
  • A Six Sigma certification.
