Job summary

Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) seeks a Team Lead, ARS Registration and Risk to guide design and delivery of ARS-based risk monitoring. You’ll drive ARCMP, registration, and regulatory oversight with a focus on continuous improvement and data-driven decision making.

The role requires deep ARS/NERC knowledge, 10+ years in electricity risk or compliance, and strong leadership to mentor the ECM-ARS team. Hybrid work arrangement applies with in-office days Tue-Thu.

Qualifications

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description

We are looking for a Team Lead, ARS Registration and Risk to join our External Compliance Monitoring – Alberta Reliability Standards (ECM-ARS) team. Reporting to the Manager, External Compliance Monitoring – Alberta Reliability Standards, this role serves as a subject matter expert in Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) registration, risk assessment, compliance oversight planning, and risk-based compliance monitoring.

In this role, you will apply expert level technical knowledge of risk frameworks, electricity industry regulatory structures, compliance and enforcement regimes, audit methodologies, and ARS and/or NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) reliability standards.

You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to support the execution and continuous improvement of the ARS Sync Up Program (Implementation and Sustainment), the Alberta Risk-Based Compliance Monitoring Program (ARCMP), and associated compliance monitoring processes.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead the implementation, execution, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Alberta Risk-Based Compliance Monitoring Program (ARCMP).
  • Lead ARS Registration, ARS Entity Onboarding, Compliance Oversight Plan (COP), and Authoritative Document Question (ADQ) processes.
  • Develop and enhance technology solutions, data analytics, reporting, dashboards, documentation, and training supporting registration, risk assessment, and compliance oversight activities.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on ARS applicability, registration, risk assessment, compliance oversight planning, and related monitoring processes.
  • Lead stakeholder outreach, education, and engagement initiatives supporting ARCMP registration and risk programs.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance monitoring initiatives are delivered on schedule and aligned with regulatory requirements and business objectives.
  • Monitor and assess NERC, WECC, and other regulatory registration and risk-based monitoring programs to identify trends, opportunities, and recommended improvements to ARS compliance strategies and processes.
  • Plan, lead, and execute ARS compliance monitoring activities, including audits, regulatory reviews, reporting, findings, recommendations, and supporting documentation.
  • Conduct research, regulatory analysis, and document reviews to support compliance monitoring, risk assessments, and strategic initiatives.
Leadership
  • Partner with the Manager, ECM-ARS to establish team strategy, priorities, objectives, and key results (OKRs).
  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance development for team members supporting ARCMP accountabilities.
  • Foster a collaborative, high‑performing team culture focused on continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and operational excellence.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Compliance leadership, Standard and Requirement Owners, Subject Matter Experts, market participants, the Market Surveillance Administrator (MSA), NERC committees, and industry working groups.
  • Lead stakeholder engagement, education, and awareness initiatives, including Reliability Standards Discussion Groups, Reliability Standards Workshops, and internal compliance training.
  • Provide guidance and subject matter expertise on ARS registration, risk assessment, and compliance monitoring matters while driving alignment, accountability, and continuous improvement across stakeholders.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited post-secondary institution. A degree in Electrical Engineering, Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation, and/or a law degree with membership in the Canadian Bar Association are considered assets. Audit, risk management, cybersecurity, or related professional certifications are also an asset.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the electricity industry in technical, compliance monitoring, risk management, audit, regulatory, and/or reliability-focused roles, with strong knowledge of Alberta and North American electricity markets, risk management frameworks, ARS and/or NERC reliability standards, and applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to mentor, coach, and develop team members, combined with exceptional relationship management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts, findings, and recommendations to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to improve business processes, manage projects and complex priorities, and deliver results independently and collaboratively, supported by strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, including the ability to evaluate complex information, identify risks, and implement effective solutions.
