Responsibilities
  • Conceive and produce a program of live journalism — on stage, online, and in-conversation — that reflects the Toronto Star’s editorial priorities and journalistic standards.
  • Identify urgent issues, sophisticated themes, and original lines of inquiry that resonate with audiences and drive meaningful civic conversation.
  • Collaborate with editors and reporters to translate reporting into sharp, live experiences that generate text, video, and audio stories before, during, and after events.
  • Collaborate with audience, marketing, and product colleagues to ensure events extend the reach of our journalism, deliver strong subscriber value, and help grow and retain our paying readership.
  • Pursue marquee speakers, newsmakers, policymakers, cultural leaders, and other hard-to-secure voices.
  • Develop rigorous interview preparation: research packs, lines of questioning, and editorial framing that push beyond talking points and captivate audiences.
  • Support moderators — including Star journalists and external hosts — with comprehensive briefing materials.
  • Be a key player in the editorial production of live and virtual events, from conception through execution.
  • Ensure that events meet the highest journalistic and production standards while adapting quickly to breaking news or late-stage changes.
  • Partner closely with the newsroom’s multimedia team to ensure events produce compelling stories, video clips, podcasts, and digital packages.
  • Manage and maintain a Toronto Star Live web page, ensuring it is a dynamic hub for all events.
  • Work close with the Star’s Editorial Audience team to integrate events into the brand’s newsletters, commenting community and social media channels
Qualifications
  • Proven track record as an Editor or Journalist with experience shaping stories, interviews, or live programming.
  • Exceptional editorial judgment, writing, research, storytelling, and multimedia skills
  • Energy and creativity, with a passion for innovative storytelling
  • A self-starter who is flexible and able to generate quality story ideas
  • Able to simultaneously manage multiple projects and tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Relentlessly high standards; detail-oriented and deadline-driven that enables the production of succinct, clear, and accurate copy on deadline
  • Interview and newsgathering skills and instincts to draw out subjects and gather the relevant information to bring a story to life
  • Able to develop and maintain contacts and sources, skillfully interview people in often-demanding situations and show resourcefulness
  • Diplomacy and well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Comfort working in cross-functional teams and in high-visibility live settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure high-profile or difficult-to-book guests or interview subjects.
  • Knowledge of video, audio, or digital production and Experience in live events or live television is an asset.

Salary: $72,787.84-$100,872.66

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement. This position will be located in Toronto.
