Job summary

Makom Afterschool provides high-quality, pluralistic Jewish and Hebrew-language education in four neighbourhood public schools to students from junior kindergarten through grade 5.

Responsibilities include supervising students after school, transporting them between schools, supporting teachers, maintaining a welcoming environment, and communicating with families. CPR training and police checks are required and paid by Makom.

Qualifications

  • Hebrew proficiency; fluency preferred.
  • Background in Jewish studies and tradition.
  • Experience with classroom teaching, camp counselling or youth work.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to children’s social and emotional development.
  • Desire to grow and learn professionally.
  • Passion for working with children.
  • CPR training and Vulnerable Sector check required (paid by Makom).

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with parents as needed, with Director of Education informed.
  • Take photos/videos of learning to share with leadership (2-5 per class).
  • Submit administrative documentation on time (timesheets, forms).
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and paid Makom events; orientation at start of year.
  • Maintain regular communication with Director of Education and Makom administration.

Job description

Makom Afterschool provides high-quality, pluralistic Jewish and Hebrew-language education in four neighbourhood public schools to students in junior kindergarten through grade 5. Children from the diversity of downtown Jewish families find their place in our warm and welcoming community. Classes run on Mondays/Wednesdays and Tuesdays/Thursdays in four public schools around Toronto.

Responsibilities:

  • Pick-up students from their local schools and/or classrooms and ensure they are checked-in and out according to Makom Afterschool policy (in partnership with classroom teacher); transport students to one of our afterschool sites (walking or TTC)
  • Support and maintain a warm, positive, welcoming and inclusive community (in partnership with classroom teacher)
  • Ensure the safety of students in accordance with Makom Afterschool policy (in partnership with classroom teacher)
  • Support the classroom teacher’s ability to teach:
    • Work in partnership with teachers by discussing in advance how you can best support them and by taking direction from them in the moments when they need additional support
    • Help with classroom management, ensuring the class is participating and following instructions
    • Be an extra set of hands in setting up and cleaning up classroom and activities
  • Support and maintain a Hebrew-language environment through Hebrew immersion and conversation (in partnership with the classroom teacher)
  • Communicate with parents as needed, particularly about attendance, keeping Director of Ed included/aware of all communications (in partnership with the classroom teacher)
  • Assist students in keeping track of their belongings to prevent loss
  • Take pictures/video of the learning happening in class and send them to Director of Education (2-5 per class)
  • Submit all administrative documentation on time as requested (timesheets, reimbursement forms, etc.)
  • Fill out and submit incident reports as needed (in a timely fashion, in partnership with classroom teacher)
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and Makom special events (paid), including orientation at the beginning of the year
  • Maintain regular and timely communication with Director of Education and Makom administration
Job Requirements:

Hebrew proficiency; fluency preferred

Background in Jewish studies and tradition

Experience with classroom teaching, camp counselling or youth work

Strong oral and written communication skills

Commitment to children’s social and emotional development

Desire to grow and learn professionally

Passion for working with children

Reliability and responsibility

All Makom Afterschool staff are required to take CPR training and pass a police Vulnerable Sector check, both of which will be paid for by Makom.
