Knowledge of the following required:
  • The development of social welfare and the evolution of the social work profession in Canada.
  • Concepts and issues of social work practice in Canada, social welfare, social policy, and their interrelationships.
  • Analyze the values and assumptions underpinning existing welfare programs and institutions, considering social, economic, political, and cultural contexts.
  • Trace the development of the Canadian welfare state, highlighting its unique aspects and shared features with other industrialized countries.
  • Examine the evolution of the welfare state in relation to economic and social inequality, racism, and gender discrimination.
  • Analyze the historical contributions of Indigenous, French, and English populations to social work philosophy and practice.
  • Critically assess the relationship between social policies and the underlying values/assumptions of major ideological approaches to social welfare.
  • The professional values of social work, including promoting and supporting institutional and social change, and their relation to broader social beliefs.
  • Evaluate social work’s role in developing social policies and programs.
