Job Title: Teaching Assistant, SAFE HAVEN

Status : Temporary, Full-time (Union position)
Weekly Hours: 35 hours /week Grid : 7
Rate: $24.43 - $28.04/hr (starting at $24.43)

The Opportunity:

The Teaching Assistant (TA) will work closely with the Safe Haven Program to support teaching staff and clients. The primary responsibilities will include working under the direction of the classroom teacher or Lead Instructor I to improve the language abilities of clients. The TA may assist the teacher in the classroom or work outside the classroom with a small group of clients or a single client on tasks and activities to improve client'slanguage skills. The TA will assist the Lead Instructor I by photocopying, laminating or otherwise assisting in the production of classroom materials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Displays knowledge of the philosophy and teaching objectives of the program;
  • Establishes and maintains rapport with students. Interacts with the students, asks question about them and shows interest. Creates a fun and safe environment. Listens, talks and shows interest in them as individuals;
  • Assists classroom teachers by working with students either on an individual basis or within a small group. Checks on students and offers help if needed;
  • Prepares and duplicates teaching aids and classroom material as required by the Lead Instructor I or Safe Haven Program Manager;
  • Maintains records and organizes resources, materials and equipment at all sites;
  • Develops program resources under the direction of the classroom teacher Lead Instructor I or Safe Haven Program Manager;
  • Facilitates conversation circles;
  • Assists in the planning of school events;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum one (1) year recent and relevant experience;
  • Experience in working with clients in a related field;
  • Adult ESL, ELSA volunteer or teaching experience required;
  • Strong interpersonal and English communication skills required;
  • Excellent computer and Internet skills;
  • Ability to work cooperatively within the team;
  • Knowledge of multicultural and settlement issues, especially as they pertain to immigrants and refugees.
