Job summary

The Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch is seeking a Teacher of the Deaf for a replacement position at the Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf. This role requires specialized skills in teaching Deaf students, including experience with multiple exceptionalities, and a commitment to obtaining fluency in American Sign Language.

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching Deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Ability to develop IEPs for Deaf students.
  • Proficiency in English and willingness to learn ASL.

  • NOTE : PDSB is currently inviting applications from OCT qualified teachers who are interested and willing to obtain the Deaf Specialist. Less than ASL fluency required for the position may be supported with an ASL / English Interpreter in the classroom while the successful candidate becomes fluent in ASL.
  • Position is available immediately until August 31, 2025 (with possibility of extension for the 2025 / 2026 School year).Technological studies teachers in the following disciplines may apply :

What we are looking for :

Qualifications :

  • Valid Certificate of Registration and Qualifications from the Ontario College of Teachers;
  • Deaf Specialist / Teaching Students Who Are Deaf Specialist or currently engaged in completing the requirements for the specialist qualification; NOTE : PDSB will consider teacher candidates who are currently engaged in completing the requirements for the specialist qualification and / or who express a willingness to obtain) ;
  • Technological Studies required;
  • Intermediate qualifications (7-8 / 9-10) and / or; Senior Division qualifications (11-12) recommended.

Abilities :

  • Demonstrated experience teaching Deaf / hard of hearing students in academic programs and programs for students with multiple exceptionalities;
  • Ability to develop and modify lesson plans, and to create IEP’s to effectively teach Deaf students;
  • An in-depth knowledge of the principles of teaching Deaf students;
  • Ability to effectively manage a classroom and students using a variety of behavioural management strategies;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including proficiency in English and American Sign Language (ASL); (NOTE : PDSB will consider teacher candidates who express a willingness to obtain ASL language fluency).
  • Ability to apply an in depth knowledge of bilingual-biliteracy-bicultural education for Deaf students;
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and work with students with multiple exceptionalities.
