Center for Early Childhood Education - Job Description

Smith College has an opening for a full-time, benefit-eligible Teacher in our Center for Early Childhood Education.

The Center for Early Childhood Education is a Reggio Emilia-inspired, laboratory, early childhood center, enrolling children from eight weeks to 5 years old. The CECE abides by health and safety regulations as required by the MA Department of Early Education and Care.

The Smith College Center for Early Childhood Education at Fort Hill is seeking dedicated, dynamic, joyful early childhood educators to join our Reggio-Emilia inspired early childhood program, serving infants through preschoolers. Located in a state-of-the-art building surrounded by beautiful playgrounds, with the support of a music studio and visual arts program, our excellent resources and child:teacher ratios create a unique and supportive working environment.

Application Requirements

Please submit a current resume and cover letter. Include a detailed list of all educator certifications and licenses you currently hold, such as Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education licensure, Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care certifications, or similar credentials from other states. If you have completed a Child Growth and Development Course or hold current CPR and First Aid certification, please include this information. Three references are required.

Primary Functions

Provide comprehensive support to the supervising teachers. Build and maintain positive relationships with CECE team members, families, and children, supporting the classroom environment and curriculum within the program's philosophy. Develop partnerships with families and colleagues to create a model early childhood program based on best practices and current knowledge. Understand and implement CECE policies and principles, and pursue professional development as required.

Responsibilities
  • Supervising and Teaching Children: Work closely with a supervising teacher and team to supervise and guide children in a developmentally appropriate manner aligned with the program philosophy. Supervise children individually or in small groups in various settings. Know each child's needs, ensure their health and safety, and promote their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Serve as a positive role model and respond to children's needs for guidance, implementing CECE philosophy. Facilitate daily activities and transitions, support children's investigations, assist with instruction and evaluation, and observe and assess children's work.
  • Maintaining Classroom Environment: Prepare and maintain cleanliness and orderliness. Assist in creating a classroom environment consistent with the school's philosophy, including cleaning, organizing materials, preparing food, creating displays, documenting learning, etc.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Attend team meetings, participate in discussions, support high-quality education and care, and interact with families about their child's experience. Attend CECE events as needed.
  • Teaching Responsibilities: Assume duties of supervising teacher during short absences, collaborate with colleagues, and perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/Experience: Background check including fingerprinting required. Coursework or experience in early childhood or related field preferred. Eligibility for Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care teacher certification within one year, and first aid and CPR certification within two months.
  • Skills: Commitment to trusting relationships, enjoyment and learning for children and staff, operating with integrity and confidentiality, teamwork, communication, literacy, interpersonal skills, knowledge of early childhood principles, support for diversity, physical ability to lift and supervise children outdoors, flexibility, organizational skills, and a professional manner.

Experience working with diverse backgrounds is preferred.
