Job summary

IWK Health in Halifax is seeking a Teacher (B.Ed.) for Intensive Outreach Services within the Mental Health and Addictions Program. The role works with children and adolescents, supports individualized education plans, and collaborates with NS public schools to plan reintegration and educational options.

The position requires a B.A./B.S. and B.Ed., NS Teacher’s Certificate (ITC), CPR Level C/BLS, and at least two years of teaching experience, with travel across Nova Scotia and 8:30–16:30 hours,

Qualifications

• Baccalaureate Degree in Arts or Science and Baccalaureate Degree in Education required.
• Valid Nova Scotia Teacher’s Certificate required, minimum ITC or equivalent certification.
• Minimum of two years teaching experience required.
• Current CPR Level C Health Care Provider or Basic Life Support (BLS) within last 12 months.
• Experience with children/adolescents with mental illness required, incl. ADHD, Conduct/ODD, Anxiety.
• Training in working with children and youth with exceptionalities, or commensurate experience.
• CPR/BLS certification needed for patient care responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Participate in an interdisciplinary treatment team to support education goals for clients.
• Travel across Nova Scotia to meet clients and schools for planning and reintegration.

The Opportunity

The Outreach stream of Intensive Services provides treatment services within the IWK Mental Health and Addictions Program. The Outreach team services children and adolescents up to 19 years of age. The teacher participates within an interdisciplinary treatment team and focuses on working with clients with disrupted learning and/or who are experiencing school/educational challenges. The teacher supports individualized education goals/needs of clients and families. This includes travel across Nova Scotia to meet with clients and families, as well as to schools to facilitate planning and to support reintegration. The teacher liaises and collaborates with NS public school staff to explore educational options and supports and to develop school plans that best meet the needs of clients. On a case-by-case basis, the teacher may provide one-to-one teaching to reintroduce clients to learning and/or to support academic progress. As necessary, the teacher assesses clients’ academic status to determine previous learning and to identify any learning gaps and/or learning challenges/deficits to inform school planning. The teacher monitors progress towards education goals throughout treatment. The teacher works with members of the interdisciplinary team in helping adolescents and families cope with mental health and addiction issues, in planning for new admissions, and attends case conferences and discharge planning meetings. The teacher collaborates with IWK teachers to share resources, educational strategies/options and engages in professional development opportunities.

Monday to Friday; 08:30-16:30

Your Qualifications

• Baccalaureate Degree in Arts or Science and Baccalaureate Degree in Education required.
• Valid Nova Scotia Teacher’s Certificate required, minimum of ITC or equivalent certification.
• Minimum of two (2) years teaching experience required.
• Current successful completion of a CPR Level C Health Care Provider or Basic Life Support (BLS) course required within the last 12 months.
• Experience working with children and adolescents with mental illness required, in particular Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Conduct /Oppositional Defiant Disorders, Anxiety Disorder.
• Training in working with children and youth with exceptionalities required, or commensurate experience.
• Special education training and experience preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to support the educational needs of children and youth with interrupted learning.
• Capacity to implement proactive and positive behaviour supports.
• Demonstrated understanding of Collaborative Problem Solving approach.
• Familiarity with Department of Education Learning Outcomes for grades P-6.
• Demonstrated ability to work with children with cognitive impairments, speech and language delays.
• Demonstrated ability to work both as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and independently in a family centred atmosphere is required.
• Demonstrated ability to liaise with families, community groups and schools to advance the educational needs of clients.
• Excellent communication, organization, problem solving and administrative skills required.
• Competencies in other languages an asset.
