Job description

Overview

The Teacher Assistant at Hampstead Hospital assists with students in the classroom setting, working 1:1 with students, when appropriate. Implements teaching plans in collaboration with the Education Coordinator and assists with documentation, correspondence, and clerical duties.

Responsibilities
  1. Provides classroom and unit coverage. Provides individualized assistance to most-in-need student(s) within a classroom setting for student’s successful completion of basic skill competencies and demonstration of positive and responsible work habits.
  2. Implements teaching plans under guidance of and in coordination with the Educational Coordinator. Communicates daily with the teacher in reviewing the specific behavioral and academic objectives and the techniques and methods to be employed for the student’s successful completion of his/her individualized instruction.
  3. Establishes clear expectations for student behavior, holds students accountable for their actions and teaches students how to demonstrate responsible behaviors through the assignment of appropriate consequences and intervention counseling. Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Observes and reports on students' performance, and records relevant data to assess progress.
  4. Participates in Discharge Planning and Continuing Care planning needs.
  5. Promotes the hospital culture of patient safety in a non-punitive atmosphere; reports medical errors and significant events; participates in hospital safety training programs and Performance Improvement activities.
  6. Maintains and oversees educational and vocational objectives and lesson plans, including but not limited to:
  7. Discrete Trial Teaching programming based on principles of ABA.
  8. A core academic (English language arts and mathematics) curriculum.
  9. Vocational programming.
  10. Assists in educational comprehensive assessment.
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or equivalent credit hours from a recognized college or technical institute.
  • No experience required. Each additional year of approved work experience in a teaching or child care environment may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
