Overview / Aperçu

Health Standards Organization ("HSO") is searching for Technical Committee members who share our passion for achieving quality health services for all. Location: Remote (virtual participation).

Open to: All members of the public

Commitment: 2 years, renewable

Availability: 7-15 hours a month (includes pre-reading, meeting preparation, virtually attending web-conference meetings and virtual standard-drafting meetings, review of relevant literature/documentation, and consensus voting, when appropriate).

Language note: The working language of the Technical Committee is English unless otherwise stated. French language capability is an additional point of consideration for applicants.

Position summary / Résumé du poste

The HSO Long-Term Care Services Technical Committee will lead the development of CAN/HSO 21001:2022 –Long-Term Care Services. The committee will take an evidence-informed, systematic approach to developing standards that assess best practices for providing safe, high quality, and resident-and-family-centred care in LTC homes and/or residential homes for Canadians, their families and caregivers, and the supporting workforce.

HSO standards foster strong health care systems by providing a foundation that promotes high quality health services where it matters most. As a member of the Technical Committee, you will be part of the development process that supports ongoing quality improvement measures in health care systems.

By working with HSO to develop standards you will be shaping the future of health services, with a lasting impact on healthcare worldwide. You will connect and collaborate with other passionate individuals who work in the field or have lived experience related to the topic of interest. Your position as a Technical Committee member and standard author acknowledges your status as a subject matter expert.

You will be helping by / Vos responsabilités
  • Monitoring, identifying, and providing strategic guidance to HSO on emerging areas of importance within the scope of the Technical Committee. This may include proposing projects for the development of new standards.
  • Helping to identify sponsorship and endorsement opportunities.
  • Working with key stakeholders and experts from Canada and internationally in the revision or development of HSO standards under the Technical Committee’s purview.
  • Bringing the perspective of the membership category you belong to (e.g., residents and families, providers, policy makers/health services stakeholders, or general interest) and working for the global community over personal or organizational interests.
  • Advising and reaching consensus on topics for inclusion and the content of the standards through a series of meetings.
  • Maintaining effective communication and knowledge transfer among Technical Committee members and HSO staff.
  • Providing guidance to HSO staff on standard-related interpretation questions and inquiries related to the technical content of the standards.
  • Promoting the adoption of standards once published.

  • You identify with one of four stakeholder categories:

- Residents and Families: Individuals with significant experience in the Technical Committee subject area, including residents and their families or essential caregivers of residents in LTC.

- Providers: Representatives from health care organizations or other end-users of the standard, including long-term care providers, caregivers, clinicians, and administrators.

- Policy makers/health services stakeholders: Members from a government ministry (health or otherwise), regulators, project funders, or government-funded bodies such as health quality councils.

- General interest: Those with subject-matter expertise in applied research, academia, or representatives from private-sector industry.

  • You have subject matter expertise through professional and lived experience.
  • You have demonstrated experience working in collaborative settings, and exhibit diplomacy, tact, and respect in group interactions.
  • You can commit to the time investment and constraints required for Technical Committee activities.
  • You can work and collaborate with others in English (as this is the working language of the Technical Committee unless otherwise stated).

  • Previous experience and/or understanding of barriers and challenges in the long-term care sector in Canada, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Understanding of health and social inequities faced by underserved, racialized, and/or marginalized communities in Canada (including Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour, BIPOC; 2SLGBTQ+; refugees and immigrants).
  • Experience working in a consensus-based team model.
  • Experience developing standards or other policy documents.
  • Value professional integrity, credibility, and commitment to ongoing improvement.
  • Strong critical thinking, judgement, and management skills.
  • Positive, innovative, and credible approach.
  • Fluency in French is an asset.
Financial assistance / Aide financière

All positions on the Technical Committee are voluntary. A patient and family volunteer honorarium is provided to all residents and family members participating on HSO’s Long Term Care Technical Committee. HSO typically provides reimbursement for expenses related to attending an in-person meeting in Ottawa. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, in-person meetings will be virtual until further notice. Additional information on membership, including resident and family honorariums, will be provided if you are selected as a Technical Committee member.
