RSM in Calgary is seeking an experienced US Tax Principal to join our growing public accounting and advisory team. The role focuses on US federal income tax, cross border taxation, international tax reporting, tax compliance, and client advisory services.

You will oversee complex US tax engagements, mentor junior team members, and deliver high quality tax solutions for individuals, trusts, partnerships, and privately held businesses with US and international reporting obligations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive US tax compliance experience in public accounting.
  • US CPA or EA preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of US federal income tax, international tax reporting, and cross-border taxation.
  • Experience reviewing US individual returns (1040/1040NR) and international tax forms.
  • Proven leadership, mentoring, and project management skills.
  • Proficiency with tax software and MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Review complex US individual income tax returns (1040, 1040NR) and ensure compliance.
  • Prepare and review international information reporting forms (FBAR, 3520, 3520-A, 5471, 8858, 8621, 8865).
  • Research and analyze US tax issues including residency, sourcing, foreign tax credits, treaties, and reporting requirements.
  • Manage multiple tax engagements with deadlines and quality standards.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and coaching to junior tax professionals.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop tax strategies and client service.
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and practical solutions to reduce risk.
  • Remain current on US tax legislation, IRS regulations, and reporting requirements.
  • Build strong client relationships through communication and expertise.
  • Contribute to process improvements and workflow efficiencies.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced US Tax Principal to join a growing public accounting and advisory team specializing in cross border tax compliance and consulting. This role is ideal for a tax professional with expertise in US federal income tax, cross border taxation, international tax reporting, tax compliance, and client advisory services. The US Tax Manager will oversee complex tax engagements, mentor junior team members, and deliver high quality tax solutions for individuals, trusts, partnerships, and privately held businesses with US and international tax reporting obligations.

Responsibilities:
  • Review complex US individual income tax returns, including Forms 1040 and 1040NR, while ensuring compliance with current federal tax regulations.
  • Prepare and review international information reporting forms, including FinCEN Form 114 (FBAR), Forms 3520, 3520-A, 5471, 8858, 8621, and 8865.
  • Research and analyze complex US tax issues involving residency determination, income sourcing, foreign tax credits, tax treaties, and international reporting requirements.
  • Manage multiple tax engagements simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining exceptional quality standards.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and ongoing coaching to junior tax professionals to support professional development and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with cross functional professionals to develop tax strategies and provide comprehensive client service.
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and recommend practical solutions that improve compliance and minimize tax risk.
  • Maintain current knowledge of changes in US tax legislation, IRS regulations, and international tax reporting requirements.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive communication, technical expertise, and proactive service.
  • Contribute to process improvements, workflow optimization, and best practices that enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in US tax compliance within a public accounting or professional services environment.
  • US CPA, Enrolled Agent (EA), or active pursuit of one of these professional designations is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of US federal income tax laws, international tax reporting, cross border taxation, and foreign information reporting requirements.
  • Experience reviewing complex US individual tax returns and international tax forms.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly.
  • Proven leadership experience mentoring, coaching, or supervising junior accounting or tax professionals.
  • Proficiency with tax preparation software, Microsoft Office applications, and accounting technology platforms.

  • Experience serving high net worth individuals, privately held businesses, trusts, partnerships, or owner managed enterprises.
  • Knowledge of cross border tax planning and compliance involving both US and international tax matters.
