The Opportunity

The Director, Tax provides leadership and management of the tax function, working with senior management, the finance team, and internal/external stakeholders. This role is integral to the finance team, offering leadership, technical expertise, and execution of tax strategies. Responsibilities include managing income tax accounting, compliance, tax controversy, planning, and ad hoc projects. The Director will develop talent within the tax team and collaborate closely with MLF’s Finance team.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and motivate the tax team, managing income tax activities (including commodity taxes for experienced candidates).
• Oversee timely delivery of consolidated income tax provisions.
• Identify and implement process improvements and efficiencies.
• Collaborate with financial reporting, treasury, investor relations, and operations for forecasting, structuring, and reporting.
• Ensure accurate and timely domestic income tax compliance.
• Partner with the VP Taxation on tax planning and audits, managing relationships with CRA.
• Engage with colleagues and executives on special projects and ad hoc requests.
• Maintain high standards for tax analysis, reporting, and compliance activities.
• Develop team members through coaching and mentorship, supporting their professional growth.
• Gain a comprehensive understanding of Maple Leaf Foods' business, strategy, culture, and values.

What You Bring:

• CPA qualification (preferably CA background).
• Completion of CPA Canada In-depth Tax Course and/or an MTax degree.
• Minimum 10 years of Canadian income tax experience, including at least 5 years in a public company.
• Manufacturing experience preferred.
• Ability to build strong relationships with business partners.
• Experience managing international tax structures and compliance.
• Experience dealing with CRA auditors and appeals.
• Leadership skills to manage a team of professionals.
• Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills.
