Tax Consultant
How does the role impact the organization?
This is a full-time temporary position of at least a year with the possibility of converting to a permanent position. Reporting to the VP, Tax Consulting & Financial Planning, you will provide responsive and effective tax consulting expertise as ongoing support to our Private Client Group financial advisors and their clients at Raymond James Ltd. and Raymond James (USA) Ltd. The position offers the opportunity to become a key resource in one of Canada’s largest markets, joining an established team of wealth management professionals located across the country.
The successful candidate will provide tax guidance and planning solutions for our financial advisors with respect to their Canadian and U.S. resident clients. The candidate must have knowledge of common Canadian planning strategies for High Net Worth (HNW) clients such as trust planning, business succession, estate freezes, insurance, IPPs, holding companies, and charitable gift planning. Expertise in cross-border tax issues is desired, such as US citizenship, US residency, US estate tax, US gift tax, immigration, emigration, and tax planning with US retirement plans. The role supports the business development of our Canadian and cross-border investment services by enhancing the client experience through an understanding of the tax and compliance complexities faced by HNW and cross-border taxpayers.
What is the position responsible for?
- In conjunction with our financial advisors, deliver tax consulting services for personal, corporate, trust, and estate clients of Raymond James and its affiliated companies in Canada and the US through client meetings and written analysis;
- Partner effectively with our investment advisory teams, trust company division trust officers, charitable foundation, insurance agents, tax preparation services, and financial planners to offer comprehensive planning solutions to our clients;
- Respond to daily income tax planning questions in a concise and timely manner using current and suitable sources for research;
- Assist with authoring client releasable educational materials related to Canadian and cross-border tax planning via articles and presentations;
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the Income Tax Act, the Internal Revenue Code, and international income tax conventions;
- Provide outstanding client service to our financial advisors and their clients by enhancing the client experience;
- Support our financial planners with respect to technical tax inquiries and reviews of HNW and cross-border financial plans;
- Review advisor-prepared marketing materials with tax content for accuracy and clarity;
- Liaise with outside tax and legal professionals to assist with tax strategy implementation; and
- Other duties and projects as assigned.

What do we expect from you?
- Accounting designation required (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA) with at least 5 years of public practice experience in Canadian personal, US personal, corporate, trust, and estate tax preparation and planning;
- Completion of the CICA In-Depth Tax Course or Masters in Taxation;
- Able to build relationships through respect and authenticity, and to collaborate with a diverse network of clients, prospects and business partners;
- Exceptional critical thinking and analytical skills to identify and resolve diverse, complex, and ambiguous issues in a timely and practical manner;
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with other professionals to create exceptional client experiences and solutions;
- Established professional values including sound judgment, discretion, and integrity;
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance or related field, or an equivalent combination of experience and education;
- Familiarity with IRS withholding tax forms, US and Canadian withholding tax on entitlements, and US retirement plan rules would be an asset;
- If converted to full-time, the successful recruit will be required to complete the US Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation (CRPC) or equivalent US planning designation within a reasonable time frame; and
How to differentiate yourself from others:
- CFP designation,
- TEP designation,
- US CPA designation, and/or
- Bilingual (French and English) skills would be assets.

Salary Range: BC (based on Education, Work Experience, etc) $115,000-130,000 in addition to competitive performance bonuses/incentives.
