Job summary

Extendicare is seeking a Tax Analyst based in Markham, Ontario, offering a hybrid working environment. The successful candidate will prepare tax provisions, manage GST/HST, PST returns and assist with audits, while supporting continuous process improvements across the tax function.

Applicants should have a university degree in accounting/finance, be pursuing a CPA designation, and possess 1–3 years of tax/accounting experience, with strong Excel skills and excellent communication abilities.

  • University degree in accounting, finance or related fields.
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA) in progress is required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare Federal and Provincial corporate tax returns, and other information returns.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly tax provisions and various tax reconciliations.
  • Research and document tax issues including addressing operational commodity tax questions.
  • Manage filing and reconciliation of monthly, quarterly, and annual GST/HST and PST returns including GST111, NRRP rebates.
  • Assist with CRA and other tax audits, assessments and reassessments.
  • Reconcile Extendicare legal entity tax filings with assessments, and draft necessary objections.
  • Perform research and prepare memos on various tax matters.
  • Coordinate tax payments and ensure timely remittance across jurisdictions.
  • Contribute to monitoring and optimization of overall tax costs, recoveries, and process efficiencies.
  • Maintain compliance with internal controls, policies, and procedures; identify process improvements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Finance and other stakeholders on tax-related projects.

The Tax Analyst will report to the Manager of Tax. The successful candidate's primary responsibilities include preparing tax provisions, ensuring compliance of income tax and commodity tax filings, assisting with tax audits, drafting objections, and special projects as required.


The successful candidate will bring critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, a strong attention to detail and a desire to \"dig in\" to learn the business while being mindful of the strong culture and commitment of the Company to provide care and services to our residents and support our team members across Canada as we \"help people live better\".


This role will be based in Markham Ontario. Extendicare offers a hybrid working environment.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Prepare Federal and Provincial corporate tax returns, and other information returns.

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly tax provisions and various tax reconciliations.

  • Research and document tax issues including addressing operational commodity tax questions.

  • Manage filing and reconciliation of monthly, quarterly, and annual GST/HST and PST returns including, GST111 annual returns, NRRP rebate for Extendicare group of companies and Assist managed home clients.

  • Assist with CRA and other tax audits, assessments and reassessments.

  • Reconcile Extendicare legal entity tax filings with assessments, and draft necessary objections.

  • Perform research and prepare memos on various tax matters as they arise.

  • Coordinate tax payments and ensure timely, accurate remittance across all applicable jurisdictions.

  • Contribute to the monitoring and optimization of the Company’s overall tax costs, recoveries, and process efficiencies.

  • Maintain compliance with internal controls, policies, and procedures; identify process improvements and support implementation initiatives.

  • Collaborate cross functionally with Finance and other internal stakeholders to support tax related projects and business initiatives.

  • Perform other projects as assigned.


What we're looking for:



  • University degree in accounting, finance or related fields.

  • Working towards a Professional Accounting Designation (CPA) is required.

  • At least 1-3 years of work experience in accounting and tax.

  • Exposure to tax audits, assessments or tax authority inquiries is considered an asset.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel.

  • Experience in sales tax returns is an asset.

  • Familiar with GST/HST rules relating to healthcare exempt and zero-rated supplies and public services bodies rebate.

  • Experience with TaxPrep software and advanced accounting system (eg. Workday).

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced deadline-oriented environment.

  • Knowledge of the real estate and/or healthcare industry is an asset.
