Job description

Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area of over 10,400 km2 and is renowned for its orchards, vineyards, golf courses, and diverse landscapes including deserts, mountains, valleys, lakes, and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The RDOS is currently recruiting for a full-time, regular Systems Operator II (Water). Reporting to the Water Utilities Foreman, the Systems Operator II will ensure efficient operation of water and wastewater systems, primarily at Lakeshore Waterworks and Skaha Estates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, collection systems, and distribution infrastructure.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment, vehicles, machinery, grounds, and buildings.
  • Monitor and adjust wastewater treatment processes as directed.
  • Assist with installation and repair of sewer and water mains, service connections, and related components.
  • Oversee water disinfection, backflow prevention, and hygiene maintenance at facilities.
  • Record operational and maintenance data accurately.
  • Monitor SCADA systems for operations and alarms.
  • Manage inventory, order supplies, and handle procurement as needed.
  • Conduct sampling and handle chemicals for wastewater processes.
  • Use various small tools and equipment.
  • Address public inquiries regarding water and wastewater services.
  • Participate in rotational weekend checks and standby activities.
  • Serve as the point of contact in the absence of senior operators.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent, plus EOCP Water Distribution Operator Level II certification.
  • Assets include certifications in instrumentation/SCADA troubleshooting, Dangerous Goods Transport, and experience in Class II or higher systems.
  • Knowledge of policies, safety procedures, and hazards related to water operations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Capable of working independently and with limited supervision.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
  • Physically fit for manual work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to read blueprints, prepare sketches, and operate mechanical tools.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain one.
  • Valid B.C. Driver’s Licence.

This position is part of the BCGEU bargaining unit, with an hourly wage of $37.40 (Paygrade 5), and includes a benefits package and flexible scheduling options.
