Job description

Software International (SI) supplies technical talent to Fortune 100/500/1000 companies in Canada. We currently have a long-term, renewable contract for a Systems Team Lead with our IT consulting client that primarily supports North American clients on various website and backend infrastructure services.

Role(s) Required: Systems Manager

Location: Remote (anywhere in Canada/USA/South America, but must be able to work on EST with the Canadian team)

Required Start Date: ASAP

Required End Date: 12 months + renewable annually

Type: Contract

Total Hours Approved Per Role: 40h/week

Rate: $60,000 - $65,000/year

Client Location: US/Canada

Summary:

Reporting directly to the CTO, the Systems Manager will oversee the Systems department, responsible for the technical management, operations, maintenance, and support of large-scale production websites and networks.

Responsibilities include:

  • Chief responsibility over systems and networks.
  • Maintain vendor relationships for technical infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with Development Team Leads and Project Management to manage website projects and approve releases.
  • Participate in planning and project discussions with senior management.
  • Assess risks and implement necessary changes to systems.
  • Ensure high levels of network and systems security, reporting concerns to the CTO.
  • Design system and network architecture, including capacity planning and performance tuning.
  • Act as escalation point for production issues, coordinating resolution efforts.
  • Manage risk, redundancy, and backups based on business needs.
  • Supervise and motivate team members, maintaining healthy team dynamics.
  • Provide technical assistance across various company departments.
  • Perform special projects as assigned by the CTO.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Technical supervision of about 7 Systems Administration staff.
  • Mentoring and providing technical support to staff.
  • Lead by example and provide performance feedback.
  • Facilitate problem-solving and team collaboration.
  • Participate in on-call rotations (12pm-8pm EST, weekly).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience with LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).
  • At least 2+ years of management/leadership experience in a tech environment.
  • Support experience with web servers.
  • Strong background with SAN storage (NFS and iSCSI).
  • Proficiency with ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Kibana, Beats, Logstash).
  • Experience adding/removing nodes, expanding and rebuilding clusters, and using InfluxDB.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, BGP, and OSPF.
  • Hands-on Linux system administration experience.
  • Advanced network administration skills, including routing, switching, and security.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle.
  • Strong documentation and organizational skills.
  • Extensive experience with MySQL, LAN/WAN/VPN, firewall tech, cloud platforms (OpenStack, oVirt, RHEV), hardware, SAN, load balancing, backup, security, and automation tools (Ansible, Puppet).
  • Experience with various web technologies.
