Job description

Systems Engineer

Waterloo, Ontario

Your opportunity at VueReal

VueReal is revolutionizing the field of optoelectronics with cutting edge micro semiconductor technologies. We are looking for a Systems Engineer to join our Engineering Team in Waterloo, Ontario.

In this role you own system level integration, bringing mechanical, electrical, optical, embedded, and application software together into working products. You will lead bring up of new hardware, build the software tools the team needs to configure, test, calibrate, and demonstrate systems, and guide junior engineers as you help shape system architecture.

Yourday-to-day activities
  • Capture and define system requirements with internal stakeholders across hardware, firmware, and software, and translate them into system interfaces, communication protocols, and system level verification criteria.
  • Own system bring up, from first hardware power on and interface verification through to functional validation, troubleshooting, and deployment.
  • Develop and debug embedded firmware on microcontroller platforms, including bring up of I2C, SPI, UART, and USB interfaces and integration of driver ICs, sensors, and peripherals.
  • Build the software the team runs on: automation scripts, test and diagnostic utilities, configuration tools, data collection, back end services and APIs, and the user interfaces on top of them.
  • Develop and maintain display calibration methods and tools, covering measurement, data analysis, correction routines, and verification of display performance.
  • Root cause complex issues spanning hardware and software, using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and data acquisition systems at the bench.
  • Contribute to system architecture and technical roadmaps, working across project management, electrical, mechanical, optical, software, test, and manufacturing.
The tools you need to do the job
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechatronics, Systems, Engineering Physics, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years in systems engineering, hardware and software integration, embedded systems, or multidisciplinary product development.
  • Strong hands on hardware debugging and bring up, with confident use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, bench supplies, and data acquisition systems, and comfort with board level probing and rework.
  • Embedded firmware experience on microcontroller platforms such as ESP32 or STM32, bare metal and RTOS based, with a solid grasp of I2C, SPI, UART, and serial over USB at the signal level.
  • Software development in Python, C/C++, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar, and a track record of building engineering tools, back end services, and user interfaces for test, calibration, diagnostics, or data visualization.
  • Experience with display systems, optical measurement, image processing, or display calibration is strongly preferred.
  • Practical experience using AI coding assistants to improve engineering productivity, with the judgment to review and validate their output.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Working knowledge of control systems, or experience with semiconductor processes and cleanroom environments, is an asset.
  • Exposure to FPGA development (Verilog or VHDL), or experience integrating and debugging FPGA based subsystems, is an asset.
  • Experience working with active or passive matrix LED lighting or display applications is favourable.
WhyVueReal?
  • A chance to grow with the team.
  • A startup backed by major industry players.
  • A clear roadmap for the successful adoption of the technology (The team has developed critical enabling technologies for micro-LED displays, and is working on integrating the technologies in products over the coming years)
You must havethe following
  • You are dedicated and focused.
  • You can adapt to quick changes stemming from being at the cutting edge of technological development.
  • You love a daily dose of challenges.
  • You enjoy collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, pushing each other to achieve your very best.
Whoweare

Our mission is to make a sustainable and brighter life experience. We enable new, innovative, and enriching products by way of a sustainable pixel fabrication process. The pixel is our technology canvas and we create new functions by printing different microdevices in the pixel area (e.g. sensors, emissive devices, mems, actuators, circuits, etc).

We make much of what we produce in house. The field includes a significant measure of optics, physics, chemistry, material, semiconductor, system, application, automation, image processing, AI, and more. The operation and business side covers dealing with different vendors (materials, tools, components, process, etc.), handling different facilities, international business development, complex project management, and more. It is a candy store for people who have the tenacity to learn complex topics and solve multi-dimensional problems and create something bigger than themselves.

We take a huge pride in our team and its achievements such as being the first team to make 7000 ppi microLED array and top it by 30000 ppi, the first team making a true printing microLED solution, being named one of the top ten Scale-up companies in Canada 2019, the first and only North American company to build displays, commercializing microLED displays, and even more that we cannot talk about publicly.

Our office is arranged upon three main factors: collaboration, fun, and innovation. It is a open concept space, with meditation and relaxation rooms, and a variety of different labs and cleanrooms.
