Job description

This is the role that makes the system real.

Photonic is transitioning from cutting-edge component innovation to fully integrated, working quantum nodes. As VP, Systems, you will own the definition, integration, and validation of those systems-ensuring that what we build actually works. You will bring structure to ambiguity, drive cross-functional alignment, and establish the discipline required to deliver repeatable system builds.

You are the bridge between hardware, chips, and software. You are accountable for system architecture, system readiness, and end-to-end performance. This role is central to moving Photonic from R&D into scalable system execution.

WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO
  • Define system architecture, build plans, and system-level requirements that translate innovation into buildable systems
  • Lead cross-functional integration across hardware, chips, and software to deliver fully functional quantum systems
  • Own system validation, verification, and readiness - ensuring systems meet performance, reliability, and quality expectations
  • Establish stage-gating, build cycles, and release processes that drive predictable system delivery
  • Build and scale a quality organization responsible for system integrity, test strategy, and acceptance criteria
  • Identify integration risks early and drive resolution across teams before they impact system builds
  • Drive accountability across engineering for end-to-end system performance - not just component completion
WHAT YOU BRING TO OUR TEAM
  • Deep experience in systems engineering for complex, multidisciplinary products (hardware + software + integration)
  • Strong background in requirements definition, system architecture, integration, and validation
  • Experience establishing quality, release, and stage-gating processes in fast-moving, ambiguous environments
  • Ability to operate across organizational boundaries with authority, aligning multiple senior stakeholders
  • Proven ability to bring structure, clarity, and execution discipline to evolving systems
  • Experience using AI/LLM-assisted workflows and analytics features with an understanding of limitations, validation steps, and data governance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting insights to both technical teams and executives.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple requests with competing deadlines.
AN EXCEPTIONAL CANDIDATE WILL BRING
  • Experience in quantum, photonics, telecom, or semiconductor systems
  • Background building novel platforms or first-of-their-kind systems—not just incremental products
  • Expertise in system architecture frameworks, requirements tooling, and validation methodologies
WHY YOU SHOULD WORK WITH US
  • Work closely with some of the brightest innovators in quantum technologies to drive breakthroughs that redefine computing
  • Enjoy a fast-paced and fun environment where you can try new things while solving innovative challenges every day
  • Inclusive company culture that values collaboration
  • Regular social events and fun activities keep our global team connected
  • Competitive compensation package including base salary, stock options, and relocation assistance for global talent
  • Comprehensive benefits including extended health, dental, life, long term disability, an employee assistance program, parental leave top-ups, and a flexible spending account

The base annual salary range for this full-time role is between CAD $280,000 to CAD $395,000. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target range for new hire base salary across all Canadian locations. Actual compensation may vary outside of this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to a candidate's qualifications including relevant education and training, competencies, experience, geographic location, and business needs. Base pay is only one part of the total compensation package. Full time roles are eligible for equity and benefits. Base pay is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

The description above is what we think an ideal candidate would look like for this role. At Photonic, we understand that everyone has a different work and life journey.
