Transports trailers within a distribution center. Moves trailers between shipping and receiving as necessary to load and unload merchandise. Applies seals to loaded trailers to prepare them to exit the facility. Records trailer movement and complete yard reports.

I. SUMMARY

This position is responsible for operating electric, diesel-electric, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives; pumping liquid chemicals, liquid petroleum products, and other liquids from tank cars; interpreting train orders, signals, and rules and regulations; transporting freight; and ensuring timely and correct switching and placement of rail cars.

II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Helper

  • Operate hand or ground throw switches, derails, gates, etc.
  • Control movement of equipment by radio, hands, and lantern.
  • Apply and release hand brakes to secure or move equipment.
  • Handle air hoses, wheel chocks, and couple/uncouple rail cars.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

III. QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education and / or Experience

  • High School diploma (or equivalent) preferred but not required.
  • Military experience is helpful.

B. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Must be extremely dependable and punctual; reliable transportation required.
  • Good communication skills; comfortable engaging in verbal, non-verbal, and written communication; active listening skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and develop plans to complete them efficiently.
  • Ability to work well with others as part of a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to follow directions from crew leaders and management.

C. Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Effective speaking skills for presentations and communication with groups.

D. Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic math operations and interpret data such as graphs, percentages, and ratios.

E. Reasoning Ability

Ability to understand and carry out instructions; solve practical problems involving concrete variables.

F. Physical Demands

Frequent standing and walking; occasional sitting, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crawling. Ability to lift heavy weights occasionally. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.

The work environment includes outdoor conditions, exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, and variable weather. Noise level is usually moderate. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for individuals with disabilities.
